Pete, your post No31 shows the masts were all taken off and stacked. (Not blown off as some are saying)

Re: Tortola BVI hit with 206 MPH wind gusts

This one is tough to comprehend....Hurricane Jose is now category 3 major....and is heading right toward Barbuda.

Yes, the same Barbuda that just got wiped out from Irma where the Prime Minister yesterday said the island is uninhabitable.
Hurricane watches have been posted.

Tough to imagine a worse punch in the gut to those 1,600 residents who are still reeling and trying to figure out what to do next.

Let's hope Jose pulls more to the north and misses Barbuda.

Godspeed to all these people. Let's hope for a last minute shift east!

Mind boggling pictures. It's hard for me to believe how many catamarans were flipped by the wind. Each flipped vessel has a story to tell, and I would like to know which cats were must vulnerable to flipping in the wind. It's proof positive that if your catamaran is going to be in a hurricane in a boat yard, it's a good idea to drive rebar steel stakes into the ground and strap your catamaran down.

Whole islands been destroyed, and you really think that there is some technique or certain boat models that would guarantee to be safe? Some of these cats are over 30 tons, by the way, and yet they were flipped like match boxes.

And beyond all of us boo hooing about boats, as we sit dry, belly full, probably ice in our drink, showered, and not without a basic need unfullfilled.

MANY, IF NOT MOST ARE WITHOUT SHELTER, FOOD, WATER, ELECTRIC, MEDICAL CARE, COMUNNICATION. Unlike houston there has been little to no assets for SAR response. UK assets are on their way, but they have but 1 ship in the region to cover all UK territories. Who will they visit first? They're sending more help, but when will it arrive? USCG medivaced a person off of JVD today. All that are aware are concerned about Jose. Thosands homeless without coms and unaware of Jose.

Boats will be replenished, homes will be rebuilt. But immediately people need help!

Yeah you are absolutely right. They have found casualties already but this may only be the beginning without water, food, shelter and sanitation.

Beef Island Airport will not be an option for some time. I have been thinking about this too. A single ship arriving amidst another hurricane doesn't sound like it can provide what is needed now.

Seaborne has a fleet of Twin Otter seaplanes based in St.Thomas, St.Croix and San Juan. No airport needed but who knows if they survived the storm.

it's breaking my heart. Reading about people in dire need need of medical attention and there is no way other than 4 times removed, through different social media sources, to contact someone for help or transport. Then since all was wiped out, no transport available.

Lessons learned, going forward, IMO all hotels, resorts, charter bases, Police, dedicated first responders should be equipped with SAT phones.

Re: Tortola BVI hit with 206 MPH wind gusts

The US Navy appears to be making a concerted effort to provide relief supplies and evacuate critically wounded and/or sick. Let's hope that those on islands that were spared can pitch in if only as proximity equals speed.

As for tisk tisking about poor hurricane prep, I think everyone should remember that these islands have had less than a week to prepare and that is not a lot of time when it comes to the logistics of yards and boats. It takes time to take down the stick, and workers, and orchestrating hauling boats and parking them is a logistical challenge. Most yards only have one travelift and one crane...and if the crane is on the travelift...that's a problem. Add on as someone said that all these individuals who are doing this need to make their own personal preparations for the storm for themselves and their families. It really all comes down to time, and there is never enough of it. They're motivated, they're not stupid, and there are only so many hours in a day.

I am sure we all ( well most ) are well aware of that , but there is precious little that most of us can do about it or we would .

perhaps if these very lucrative TAX HAVEN islands actually charged a bit of tax for stashing the ill gotten gains of much of europe and usa they might be able to afford basic equipment

Well they do actually but very little gets past the local government officials. Having grown up in the BVI, I am astonished at how much money has been brought to the islands since the 70's and how little the infrastructure has benefited from it. There is an incredible amount of palm greasing going on. But that is better left for another thread.
