Xantrex Freedom 3000 charger cycling on and off when connectedness to shore power

Pulled into slip after 400 nm trip. Significant amount of motor sailing so batteries up around 80% charge. Inverter worked fine during the trip. Connected to shore power and enabled charger. Charger is now cycling on and off every minute or so and cutting off ac power onboard. Power to the boat is good as indicted by blue seas monitor, so problem seems to be with charger. No fault messages have appeared. I’m mystified. Any ideas?

Check the input voltage and freq.

They are designed to shut off if bad power. It may be right on edge


When the charger shuts off because of this. it will invert the boat. But only if inverter is enabled. Something to try.

Thanks for the suggestion. As you suggested, checked voltage and frequency: 122 V and 60 Hz. Thinking I might try starting the gen set and running the charger off of that and see what happens. Bad idea?

New twist to mystery. Running genset and still experiencing same issue. However, my ac panel is divided in two. Top half of panel with heat/ac, refrig/freezer, and hot water heater running perfectly. Bottom half of panel with charger/inverter, ac outlets, continues to cycle on and off.

Only the bottom half goes through the inverter / charger. Sounds like a failing inverter charger if the input power is good.

Consider yourself lucky because this is the time you can replace the horrible Xantrex with a better unit. I recommend Victron Multiplus or even a Magnum etc.

I had the same issue with my Xantrex. Every time I would reconnect it to shore power or generator, it went into a 3 hour bilk charge of my batteries...even if they didn’t need it. Talked to Xantrex...was time for a new inverter, which I did before overcharging my batteries to death.

I have Prosine 2000...when I came to Europe,it was shutting off showing "Bad current error". I have set the new range in the Configure mode for frequency and voltsge and,it worked well for free years-was charging and inverting. Now it gives another headake-shows battery 0.0V,while they are 12.8(DC pannel and tester). Hopefully,planning to replace this beast with Victron soon
