wiring GPS to ais vhf

I have a standard horizon gx2150 and a nmea connector hooked up to my raymarine GPS receiver. I've talked to standard horizon support and they've said the blue wire coming from the vhf is the "GPS data in", and the green/brown go to the nmea connector ground.

Thing is I have no clue which of the 5 holes on the nmea connector are signal/ground/etc.

Anyone have any idea or how to figure it out?

What Raymarine GPS recevier model # is it exactly? Some Raymarine GPS receivers don't output NMEA.

Don't know but there were two GPS display devices. Both really old. One is a LORAN if that helps any

LORAN doesn't work in the US.

Do you have a picture of the Raymarine GPS receiver? Most Raymarine GPS receivers are mounted outside on a pole. They look sort of like this:

the 2150 is probably set to 38.400 by default. if you are hooking it up to a gps and not a plotter that takes AIS, you'd have to change the speed setting in the radio.

The 2150 has 2 serial ports. One is 4,800 and the other is 38,400.

I know which wire on the GX2150 needs to be hooked up to that connector.
The GPS receiver is a raymarine. I pulled this plug out of an ancient loran GPS display unit. The plug is a standard nmea, so I assume that the GPS receiver is broadcasting a nmea signal.

Of the 5 pins of the nmea connector, does anyone know which is commonly used for signal, ground, and power?

There is usually a nmea in, nmea out, ground, and power right?

there is no such thing as a standard nmea connector. you need the manual and color codes for your gps / chart plotter or whatever you have. which you haven't told us.


there is no "power" for nmea unless that is actually your gps ant cable like a ray 120/ 125

This I don't know, but I know the device which the cable plugged into before was a Raytheon nav298 gps loran. I cant seem to find a manual for it.

According to the manual it has 2 inputs and one output. One input is 4,800 by default the other is 38,400. The output is 38,400 by default. The 2150 has the ability to multiplex AIS, DSC data into a single output for chart plotters with only one NMEA input.

Since there are only two cables from the GPS receiver, I would guess, and if there is no information then try reversing them. Re: Baud rate, standard NMEA 0183 is 4800 (which GPS devices send) and 38,400 is high speed 0183 (which AIS devices send). In your case its going to be 4800 baud from the GPS receiver to your AIS receiver.

That connector does not look like an NMEA connector. Looks more like power, grnd, etc...

There is no such thing as an "NMEA connector", as already pointed out, because NMEA never standardized on one. There is no standard NMEA wire color code either. Each manufacturer has their own standard. And what many manufacturers call NMEA-0183 isn't really NMEA-0183. They often use single ended data wires instead of differential as specified by the standard. But usually single ended will work. A correct NMEA-0183 data path sends data in one direction only via 2 signal wires (+ and -) and usually ground or shield.

The correct wiring is + OUT connects to + IN, -OUT connects to -IN and ground connects to only the IN device ground. The OUT ground (if their is one) doesn't have to connect to anything.

However, there are lots of non-compliant NMEA-0183 devices that treat - IN/OUT and GROUND the same. So sometimes you have to connect -IN to ground even though that isn't what the standard says.
