Westerbeke 8KW Fuel Consumption

I have a new to me Irwin 46 that has a Westerbeke 8KW genset. Can anyone tell me what to expect re fuel burn per hour?

It is approx. 1.3 gph with a full load.

Bill, thanks for your input. With a load at 1800 rpm I would have to say I’m surprised by the high, in my mind, consumption.

What do you run at full load if I may ask?

I agree it seems high for an engine that is only putting out 14 hp at 1800 rpm. That is the literature value and would expect under partial load to be closer to 0.75-0.9 gph.

We don't have anyway to directly measure the fuel usage so I estimate ~0.75 gph.

The manual for the BTD 8 says fuel consumption is 0.9gph at full load. Our experience was closer to 1/2 gph normal usage. If you want to PM me an email address, I can send you PDFs of the manuals. I have two versions of the installation/operation manual, a parts list, a technical manual and a service bulletin that may apply.

We run our Westerbeke for 230v 50hz. Drawing about 15-20 amps (4kw) we usually burn about 1.5 to 2.0 litres per hour which is fairly heavy compared to more modern designs.

Our 8kw WB has 11,000 + hrs on it and it’s still going strong. Runs two A/Cs plus refrigerator and freezer 24/7 while we’re cruising. .5 gph fuel burn like clockwork. This is on a Bertram, not our O’day by the way
