Question On Diode placement

Good Morning,

If anyone can tell me why the keyed contactor requires a diode between the neg and pos terminals please let me know. It seem odd to me. I would mention this motor has regenerative breaking if that might be something to do with it.

It's standard pratice. As the field in the relay collapses it can cause a spike which could cause the relay to close again. The diode prevents that.
