Lehman 80 with large frame alternator

My Lehman 80 currently has a dual belt, small frame, internally regulated, Leece Neville 105A alternator - now dead

I want to replace it with a higher capacity alternator and Balmer smart external regulator. American Diesel tells me that the max output they recommend is 130A and dual belts.

Not sure why the 130A max but presumably due to side loading at the crank or water pump? Perhaps a serpentine belt would resolve this issue but that is an expense that I do not need and 130A is sufficient for me. In any case I just bought new brackets and dual pullies so not keen to throw it all away and start over.

I do not see a small frame, Mororola style mount, alternator from LN over 105A.
Will a large frame alternator fit my engine using the stock brackets? I have the LN kit to use either a 1 or 2" bottom foot on the Motorola style mount

Anyone else other than LN for reliability?

Dont know your engine but Balmar has some small frame alternators like the AT-165 or Balmar 621-150-SR-IG that could fit.

Both come with dual pulley as standard.

Re: Lehman 80 with large frame alternator

Not overly keen on the 1000 - 1100 USD Balmer price, nor a small frame alternator and the heat it generates at 150-165A

A 105A small frame LN is 200 USD on FleaBay. At 200 I have a spare + 2 LN rebuild kits on board
I have the LN kit to convert to an external regulator

I do not want to open the discussion of a "marine" alternator VS a heavy duty truck alternator and have already decided from past experience that the LN is fine. .

I would however prefer a large frame 100-130A if it would fit and has the right mount

Re: Lehman 80 with large frame alternator

You already have dual belts so if you have the room fitting a large frame should be reasonably easy if not a bolt on. Making a new mount to bolt onto the engine with the right offset is a small project for any metal working shop.

"if you have the room fitting a large frame"

That is what I need to know as the boat is in Fiji and I am not

It would also be nice to find a large frame with a single 1 or 2" Delco/Motorola mount so that no new bracketry is needed
