LED Underwater Lights

Hi

Can anybody of you recommend a good trough hull LED underwater light which is not costing more then 250$ each and has a good quality anyway.

It will be for a 46' Sailing catamaran, do you know what is a typical hull thickness in the stern of the vessel?

does it have to be mounted on the boat? Why not use waterproof LEDs and mount them to the swim ladder? That would save the cost of having it be a something that is a through-hull.

Try Googling "waterproof LED" or "underwater LED" and maybe minus-out the ones you find that are expensive.

People use them for fishing, to attract fish. Also, it's a bit entertaining, seeing the fish that come visit the night at light. They are feeding off the small fish that are attracted to the light.

I had Ocean LEDs professionally installed on my mono hull sail boat. Two in the stern. Thru hull, cost installed was $ 1,600 total for both. These in my opinion are the best quality. You can unscrew the entire unit, without leaving a hole in your boat. If you are considering this, don't go cheap, your boat might sink in the process.

Here is a link from my blog, and you can see them in use, also I installed matching spreader lights. Total install was close to $4,000 for both.

You'll notice some guys swimming by the boat with the lights on, we are in highbourne cay marina in the Exumas, Bahamas, this marina has a large population of sand sharks, apparently harmless.

Underwater lights use, fishing, but illegal in some areas for fishing. I installed them just to look cool. The spreader lights look cool to, but they have a safety purpose, for working on the deck at night, you won't lose your night vision.

perko has some new externally wired transom mount underwater leds that look pretty cool i think a set runs around 220.00 ive got them about 3rd on my wish list right now, at that price you could run 2 sets....perko 0181DP2WHT .. < google this

Thx a lot for all the good replies, i think i will move to the hull mounted ones as you get good ones for around 120 - 200$ & you drill only 3 to 5 small holes in to the hull versus one big one which might lead to insurance problems.

How to you make sure the small holes are water tigth and that there is no water coming in to the gelcoat?

Does anybady of you use the hull surface mounted ones, which ones are good.

Do you have any problems with corrosion?
Do you have any problems with the fact that they stick out off the hull, segrass, fouling, speed?

Not through-hull but this is an interesting portable unit ..... might be a lot of fun for some of us.

I saw fishermen using the green underwater light for the first time a few weeks ago, was in a entrance channel and made for a pretty surreal bay entry.

radonic, I went to ur blog and saw ur lights. I think they look fantastic. If for no other reason, they are cool to look at.

I want to get this professionally installed on my multi-hull (when I buy it). I dont' necessarily want to look like the above picture, but something similar, or close to what you have. I'm curious if you can alter colors? and how has it held up since the install? no problems? leaks? cracks?

I'm sure you are the talk of the marina when u turn them on.

one other thing I'm wondering as I research, it seems like they are mounted on the exterior. I wonder how this affects sailing performance?
