Re: Alternator Size with LiFePo4

All I did was change from the factory 35 amp small frame mitsubishi alternator to a 75 amp Chevy small frame 12si alternator which necessitated a new upper adjusting arm be fabricated .
Still going to be internally regulated and will be run through a 60 amp renogy b2b
Made a bit easier or harder depending on your view there was no alternator when I purchased the engine .
The new bracket is the green bar I appropriated from the Volvo I sold making the new adjusting bar .

Re: Alternator Size with LiFePo4

Newhaul, certainly a less dramatic and cheaper approach. I got tired of slow charging and am on a mooring. Solar and good Batts are the next steps.

The alternator on me is just a backup / topup when leaving port . Remember im just 250ah with 200 hard and 200 flex solar i am upgrading to an mppt .
Also picked up a fully adjustable trace 2512 inverter charger that can easily run off my small generator as well .

28SI Install Clearances checked, ordering J10 pulleys

Now that I know the 28SI #8600312 160a Alternator will fit and I have confirmed the shaft dimensions, I have ordered the J10 Sheaves.

From B&B Manufacturing
  • 10J200JA 2" J10 sheave $36.23
  • JAx7/8 bushing $7.50
  • Thick washer needed, 7/8" shaft hole x 5/16" to 3/8" thick (hopefully B&B makes them as a standard part)
Balmar Altmount Serpentine Pulley
  • 48-AM-69 for 3YM30 5.24" J10 Pulley with 4 holes, mounted backwards with (4)bolts onto the face of the crank pulley. $250.
Next I need to change the alternator to external regulation.

I hope to keep up with daily use (80ah-90ah) by charging while going in and out of harbors while cruising, perhaps (1.5-2hr motoring). The alternator will be belt managed to about 100a. Then a 100w or (2)50w panels may assist, and also recharge more fully while on the mooring. We will stay with 6vdc in series T-105's (2 pairs) until they die then decide on batts.

Re: Alternator Size with LiFePo4

I do have one of Al Thomason's Smart Alternator Regulator's Gen3 that is the precursor to the Wakespeed WS500 and I am on a google group called Smart Alternator Regulator which is an Opensource Regulator group that Al started. Pete D. on that group has refactored Al's code and is doing further work on this project. If you are interested I suggest you sign into the group pronto. There may even be more discussion about opensource BMS or possibly connection to an existing BMS that is already available. Pete's posts are likely at the top.

I’m looking to build one of those over the winter.
