hi,

I know I may look rather stupid, but I still like to hear opinions on both sides of the barricade , not only surveyors, but also common people that may have encountered similar issues...

For now I was concerned if technically it could be done,

resulting in a safe and proper boat to sail.

Considering there is no extensive damage beyond what one can see, how many work hours would you estimate (to do a rough job)?

With hole big enough to fit a Mini Cooper, there is undoubtedly damage beyond what the eye can see.

Can the hole be closed, yes. But even with professional hands it would be a rough job.

Can it be safe to sail? I personally would not put a mast on it. So for my personal standards, no.

The brokers who are pushing these sales are shady, as in dubious, questionable, doubtful, suspicious, suspect, irregular and most importantly unethical. Like someone selling a car that is wrapped around a tree.

That sales person undoubtedly gave you their estimated cost of repairs. “All she needs is 100k and she’ll be like new.” After you spend 50, 100 or even 150, you’ll still have a previously wrecked boat that is even harder to get rid of.

Yes it can be done.. have seen mono's with similar damage been repaired and gone on to sail for years after.
It could be a very worthwhile way of getting a lot of boat for little money but the work will have to be done indoors in a controllable environment I would imagine and not a quick screw and patch up job outside.. proper prep and drying out of the surrounds for sure..
Very carefully check the area where the main beam runs along under the aft bulkhead of the saloon into the top of the cabin in the hull.. if there's signs of cracking/fractures up there on the inside then leave it be.. if its just the hole life is simpler.

I am a, retired, marine engineer. If you're seriously considering buying this cat then you need to invest in a survey done by a GRP specialized marine engineer, believe me that this not come for free.

Confused, seems there are two parallel threads.

Plumbing also. Did you see the aft head hanging out of the hole

Good Lord! For that money you could go hog wild and buy a decent boat ready for sea. You could even get in some sailing :-)!

If you are contemplating making this machine seaworthy again as a DIY job, you are looking at at least 3 years on the hard before you can expect to splash her! By the time all is said and done I expect you'd be $75K into her.

The question is not so much "can she be made safe" as it is "can you remain financially safe" if you take this on. And even if you could, you'd be daft. There are far better ways to spend seventy five grand!

Was the boat in the water when the damage was done and if yes, how much of the interior was flooded? Repairing the hull is a big job requiring boat building professionals, but it can be done - huge patches are routinely cut out of the sides of power boats to change engines and gensets. I would be more concerned about the extent of other damage, because the list could be endless and you won't know what needs to be replaced until each flooded area is dismantled - a very deep money pit.

Best answer.
______________

Even IF you could patch that huge hole, it is not just a hole (it is a major damage to hull integrity), you would have to disclose this to any future buyer or face consequences both legal and moral.

I don't think it is worth the cost (whatever you are quoted), and would be a huge money pit, risk, and possible liability now and later.

Even IF you successfully patched the hull, eventually you will want to sell that boat. At that point, the real cost to you will become more apparent.

Save your time, effort, and money for a boat in good, safe, seaworthy, condition. Then go enjoy sailing, with fewer worries about your own safety and your ability to sell your boat.

Depends what you want to do with it? Would you be happy to cross oceans in it is very different to being OK for some weekend marina hopping. Will likely also mean you would not be able to resell it without resorting to dishonesty. As it is a cat maybe you could take a mold of the other hull

It's common practice to open the side of a "steel" build to change an engine, in my +30 years practice I have never seen this done to a GRP boat.

I would consider a damaged catamaran in similar condition. Got one? Let me know. IaAngus@netins.net If it's trashed inside and out I'm probably not interested.

Re: repair advise -very big hole in the hull(lagoon 440)

I've seen offshore power racing boats with that much damage be repaired successfully. It would be much easier if the manufacturer could lay you up that section of the hull and sell it to you. Was that boat sunk if so all the Mechanicals and wiring will need to be addressed as well. Is it financially feasible will that is totally up to you

one question:
would you do it if you had available qualified working force at 10$ an hour?
electricians, plumbers, etc?
