Re: Astrea 42: Owners?

Anybody received New 45 video walk through? Other tread of this forum mentioned that FP sent out this to the people who ordered the New 45.

We have been onboard a New 45 is there anything specific you’d like to know?

Re: Astrea 42: Owners?

Volvo D2-40 - GONE!

So I was talking to one of the Aussies online who picked up hull #26 a month or so ago and it turns out that FP put a D2-50 in as he was told: "they didn't have any D2-40's in stock". I spoke to my dealer and he said that three Astrea's have had D2-50's put in them. I then heard that Volvo has discontinued the D2-40 so I went to their website and sure enough, there is no D2-40.

I'm going on hearsay at the moment but was wondering if anyone else in the group can shed any light on this as we have opted for the D2-40 upgrade?

Volvo discontinued the 40. FP has been installing D2-50s in their place since it happened. The new 45 will have 50 or 60hp engines depending on which you choose. (Was supposed to be 40 or 50hp).

I think it is almost a year since Astrea hull #1. Still only #26??? I thought they can make 1 boat per week.

Re: Astrea 42: Owners?

Hull35 went in the water two weeks ago. There are big delays with transport from the factory to the port apparently. I think they will close for a month over August and have a new production line just for Astrea’s that will be fully operational by September and they should start flying out then. It’s hard to piece together all the information (rumors) I see from various sources

Re: Astrea 42: Owners?

Dry weight with saildrive 130S, kg (lb)
D1-30: 158(348)
D2-40: 189(417)
D2-50: 253(558)

So the upgrade from D1-30s to the D2-50s will represent an additional weight on the stern of the boat of about 190kg(420lbs).

Does this not seem like a tremendous amount of additional weight to you guys?

If on top of this you have the swim platform (weight unknown to me), what will all this extra weight do to the seaworthiness of the boat?

Could we have here a situation of diminishing returns with the D2-50s?

Opinions?

Re: Astrea 42: Owners?

As per the user manual, the displacement weight is 12695kg and the maximum load displacement is 17479kg and the liquids total weight is 1254kg. The extra 190kg is just like putting two solid crew aboard so I don't think it will make that much difference (but I'm no expert!). In the manual, it also lists the Yanmar 30 and 45 engine so we may end up with those instead. I've attached the technical specifications pages from the manual FYI.

Re: Astrea 42: Owners?

If you can get the Yanmar for the same price I'd consider them. It was a very large upcharge for the Saona 47 so I ended up staying with the Volvo despite a nagging MDI problem on the Volvo. Atlantic Cruising Yacht says it is fixed, but I had 30 years positive experience with Yanmar so I would have preferred them. The Volvo are good engines also. If you go with Yanmar I'd suggest checking footprint and layout. Someone told me that the 57hp Yanmar was difficult to get to the raw water impeller on the Saona.

I may be wrong, but I believe “maximum load displacement“ represents the maximum weight of absolutely everything that you could load the boat with including the boat itself! I believe “Light Displacement “ means the weight of the boat with a minimum of equipment (i.e. essentially no options). That would mean the weight allowed for options, liquids, luggage, food and crew to be a max of about 4800kgs. In such case the weight of the d2-50s would take quite a chunk.

Who can weigh in?

We just arrived in France and visited La Rochelle marina today. We are hull 46 and it’s in the water I’m not sure how much further they are than 46. Hope that helps.

We received our hull # about a week ago. It's #71. Supposed to be in the water in France in early Dec. We'll see....
