RPi3 Touch screen not working with openCPN

I've just installed openCPN on an Raspberry Pi 3 with the official 7" display. I've updated everything to the latest greatest version (OS+openCPN).

The touch screen works great for every app except openCPN! Where I can't get the main menu bar to work. I click/tap and nothing happens, it selects the area (say settings) but doesn't execute it. To me the behaviour looks like the X11 button-release event is not captured or ignored. If I attach a mouse and get past this into a sub menu, I can use the touch screen interface just fine.

i've seen the same openCPN behaviour describe on a different form (No touch on official 7" Touchdisplay) but there doesn't seem to be fix or work around.

Has anyone else experienced this, or better, found a solution?

did you ever figure this out??? I am having the same issue with OpenCPN 5.0 on OpenPlotter
