OpenCPN and Mac OSX

I have used opencpn for 2 years with an XP system and I think it's fantastic. I'm trying to get it running on my mac with os 10.6. It seems to be working fine, but:
1. I can't get the GPS/NMEA data stream window to appear. In XP it displays a window titled COM5, or whatever, but the screen doesn't even appear in os x.
2. The right part of the display is cropped out, so I can't see the status displays, telling me how good the GPS data is.
I'm using a GlobalSat usb GPS dongle with built-in prolific usb-serial converter. This is named /dev/cu.usbserial in the NMEA data source box.

Has anybody had these problems?
Thanks for any help,
Mike

I'm sorry

I can't help at all, but the question of a Mac version often crops up on French forums at least...
If you succeed , do you intent to release it ?

Re: OpenCPN and Mac OSX

Hi

I am having the same problem, I deleted the install and then reinstalled the BU353-based GPS.

I have the GPS utility open but it will not pick it up. I have changed the serial port.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Kegendron:
What version of Mac OS are you talking about?
Did you install the proper driver for the BU353 from GlobalSat's Web site?
Did you also check for proper operation of the BU353 with the GPSNavX utility?

Their are lots of possible problems causing this difficulty with your Mac.

Thanks,
Freddie

Freddie:

I am using 10.6.8.
I am using http://www.usglobalsat.com/store/dow...6_usb_drvr.zip

I down loaded GPS utility and it will not come up. I also borrowed two other pucks and nothing. I believe it is my laptop, it will not recognize the GPS.
I tried this also http://www.usglobalsat.com/store/downloads/GPSInfo.zip

PL-2303 Mac OS X Driver Installation Guide.

Thanks for the input.
Kevin

Re: OpenCPN and Mac OSX

Freddie: I have found something here,

After rebooting the system, you can now plug the PL-2303 USB-to-Serial adaptor or cable to the USB port. You can first run the System Profiler program under the Applications-Utilities folder. Click USB hardware inside System Profiler and look for “USB-Serial Controller” or “USB-Serial Controller D”. This means that the hardware device is detected by your Mac computer.

It is only listed as CP2104 USB TO UART BRIDGE CONTROLLER NOT USB-SERIAL CONTROLLER AS THE INSTRUCTIONS INDICATE.

Re: OpenCPN and Mac OSX

Thanks for the reply. Yes but on page 7 when I enter to verify the driver it is not there.

I believe I have a problem with my mac book. I do =not know how to correct this problem, I am in Bonaire with no mac service.

Re: OpenCPN and Mac OSX

So when you see nothing in System Profile for USB then your Mac might be probably defective.

Re: OpenCPN and Mac OSX

I have a Pharos GPS that says Microsoft on the top. its just a pharos chip with there badging, I found this to be most helpful. Don't know if it is the same problem you are having but I downloaded this driver for a serial to USB driver and then modified per instructions on second link.

Products

and these are how to debug the Pharos GPS

Pharos USB GPS on OSX (and how to modify a .kext) | DataLinkControl

follow instructions closely and edit in terminal window. DO NOT edit in text format using show package contents. maybe this can help you too
