OpenCPN 3.0.2 don't want to start

Hello everybody!
I have a problem, and I hope that someone can help me.
I've downloaded the latest version of opencpn (3.0.2.), installed it following the instructions(turn off antivirus, unplug network cable...) and the installation process passed ok 'till the moment when i had to push the Finish button. The computer started ''thinking'' for a couple of seconds and then nothing happend.
Time after time, installation after uninstallation there is no changes.
Every time I try to start the program, the computer just take it's time to think and nothing happens.
The machine is running on win7 ultimate x64 sp1, everything updated correctly. I even downloaded the runtime application mentioned on the web page, but belive me, nothig happening yet.
I have been reading posts on the forum for the last 20+ hours and I have found a similar problem to this one, with the only diference that bobmax's opencp has started and then died...
Please, tell me what to do? What I need to post here so you can see what is going on?
Thank you all!

Re: OpenCPN 3.0.2 don't want to start

If you've been reading lots of post you should know by now that the first thing to do is enclose the content of your opencpn.log file.

You can also try deleting all navobj.xml files from C:\ProgramData\opencpn (Note! This folder is by default hidden in Win7)

There is no such thing as navobj.xml in that folder ( C:\ProgramData\opencpn ). The only thing that is contained in that folder is ''opencpn'' and it's a text file. Here is the content of that file:

Re: OpenCPN 3.0.2 don't want to start

Sounds very strange...

First of all, let's make your file extensions visible so you actually know what the file is called:

Open an Explorer window onto the C:\ProgramData\opencpn folder.

Now look at that window and give the "alt" key a quick click. This will cause a menu-bar to appear.

In this menu-bar, choose View > Folder Options...

In the following window, choose the view tab.

In this tab, uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types"

Press OK.

Now tell me what files you see in this folder.

I've followed your instructions step by step, and now i see the same thing with some variations. The file is renamed into ''opencpn.log'' and the content is the same as before...

Re: OpenCPN 3.0.2 don't want to start

OK, it is very weird that you do not have any opencpn.ini file, but still get some information to put the boat in 33.358, -79.282....

And also that the program says it is creating the file but it is still not there!

...don't know what to say. Some weird permissions?? We can try deleting the whole folder (C:\ProgramData\opencpn) and see what it manages to recreate.

Re: OpenCPN 3.0.2 don't want to start

I' ve tried, few days ago, to install it on another laptop (win7) and another notebook (win7) and the result was the same. First I tought it must be smthng wrong with the installation that I had on a USB stick, well, I was aboard and had no internet to download a fresh copy. When I made it home i reinstalled my OS, updated it, downloaded and installed a fresh installation of opencpn, and here is where we are...
So, your idea is to delete the folder C:\ProgramData\opencpn and try to run the application again?
Give me a minut, I'll be back with updates

Re: OpenCPN 3.0.2 don't want to start

What happens if you paste C:\ProgramData\opencpn\opencpn.ini into your file browsers location bar, and hit enter?
Have you tried to search for "opencpn.ini".

Re: OpenCPN 3.0.2 don't want to start

I just realized that the position is the default position, so that explains that.
Still doesn't explain why it fails to create an ini file.

I attach a default opencpn.ini file. Let us try putting it in that folder and see if it wants to start. You need to change the name of the file from opencpn.ini.doc to just opencpn.ini
Attached Files
File Type: doc opencpn.ini.doc (6.4 KB, 61 views)

Tried again, and deleted it. Runned opencpn again, and a new log file popped up with the same content like the earlier ones. Still nothing, the computer just spins the ''circle'' for 2-3 seconds and nothing happens...yet...

Logfile is exactly the the same??
Even says "Creating new Config_File: C:\ProgramData\opencpn\opencpn.ini" now that the file is already there?

Re: OpenCPN 3.0.2 don't want to start

...another thing we can try if your permissions are screwed somehow:

Go to the Opencpn install folder, should be C:\Program Files\OpenCPN or similar.
Right click on the opencpn.exe file and select "Run as Administrator". Say Yes to the following UAC popup.

Re: OpenCPN 3.0.2 don't want to start

Good man, I think that I don't understand you.
I've downloaded that file and renamed from .ini.doc to .ini
Copy/Paste in C:\ProgramData\opencpn and double clicked on opencpn.exe on my desktop. Circle spinned few seconds and nothing new happend. Then I tried to delete the log file and got that message. Opened task manager hoping that the application is running somewhere ''hidden'', but no-no. Closed task manager, tried to delete again the log file, this time with more luck. Double clicked again on opencpn, circle spinning again, log file appears-cicrle disapears...
This is the new log file

Re: OpenCPN 3.0.2 don't want to start

As you see in the new logfile it is now saying "Using existing config... etc" instead of creating new one. So the world is not totally upside down. Always something.

Now go try running as administrator as I said. NOT from the shortcut on your desktop. Go find the actual executable file as described above.
