Minor Bug: Base outlinesa chart not displaying at 33x

Just found a small bug on 917.

If I zoom out to 33x, I loose the base world outlines. The routes and map outlines remain drawn.

Can the NOAA charts be downloaded directly or does one have to go through a dealer and pay?
If they can be done directly, could someone give a quick lesson or provide a tutorial?
Thanks much,

1. Start OpenCPN Version 1.3.3 Build 917.
2. Click on Create Route
3. Make a route with 2 waypoints
4. Right click mouse and left click end route.
5. Right click on blue arrow on the route line and left click Activate Route

6. Right click on the first waypoint and left click Delete Waypoint
7. Right click on the second waypoint and left click Delete Waypoint

8. CRASH
As other have already stated this is repeatable on Linux.DDD screen dump is available if necessary. This is a bit silly crash, a route has to contain at least 2 wpts. Just prevent deleting wpts on active routes once the number of wpts of the active route == 2 ,or maybe allow a route with just one wpt, to be able to home in on one position.

I'm impressed with all the new features since the release of 1.3.2.
Great job, Dave.

Dave..

I have had precious few crashes in the last few builds... I am using the BASIC version 'OpenCPN_130_Setup' plus build 917 running under Vista Home.

Do you think perhaps the basic OpenCPN_130_Setup version is more stable?

Hello Dave

My previous post declaring all is well was erroneous. Crashes were still occurring on a regular basis. With this new beta 917, there is no change. Crashes still occur within 5-30 minutes.

I have captured a crash with drwatson and would be happy to pass the log file along.

Build 917
Vista

Mexico Charts?

Reading all of this thread, up to page 57 so far, thought I'd take a break. Next week I'll see if I can contribute to the documentation arm of this cool product.

In the meantime, can anyone point me to free charts of Mexico? I'll be headed south to Baja as part of the Baja Haha ralley and would love to "test run" OpenCPN.

Has anyone looked at using DNC's (Digital Nautical Charts) from Digital Nautical Chart ??

Thanks for all the good work, it's a great looking program.

no crashes here :-)

While crusining, using Windows XP

sailed 8h today, using an active route, lots of traffic, AIS alarms, using NOAA BSB charts. Besides the well known crash, when deleting waypoints of an active route, no problem here!

Sinbad, ChuckSK, and other Windows users with crashes, please go trough the effort to create a crash dump as described by Dave in

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...postcount=1201

New news:
The Windows build was compiled with embedded debugging info, which should help us find the lingering crashes.
Here is how this works:

We use the MS application DrWatson to capture and format a "Crash Dump". This dump is a small file which contains the state of the system at crash time. The dump file may be sent to me (NOT Microsoft and I can dissect it with the source code and maybe find the problem quickly. Linux users are familiar with the same concept of using gdb on a core dump.

For those Windows users who want to give this a whirl, here goes.

1. First, configure DrWatson....

From Windows, Start->Run->drwtsn32
Set the following options:

Crash Dump Type: Mini
Dump Symbol Table
Dump Thread Contexts
Create Crash Dump File

Note the location of the Crash Dump Files for later. It is something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson

Click "OK"

2. The configuration need only be done once. Subsequently, you may start DrWatson with

Start->Run->drwtsn32 -i

DrWatson needs to be started only once per login session, and stays quietly in the background waiting for a crash.

3. Run opencpn as usual. Try to create a crash. If you succeed, you will get the normal MS " Opencpn Blah Blah needs to close...blah blah Send/Don't Send"
Click "Don't Send".
DrWatson wil capture a dump file.

In the folder location recorded in Step 1, you will find a file called "user". This is the dump file.
This is the file I need for diagnosis with source tools. Please email attach this file to me directly.

I hope this effort will pay off in finding those pesky crashes, and we can move to Release of 1.3.4

The debug program I used was DrWatcom not DrWatson. I hope the dump files will still be useful.

Right click on tide icon in Guam causes crash

While arm chair cruising at anchor, trying to cause Opencpn to crash:

Can be replicated:
  • Use NOAA chart 81004,
  • Zoom to Guam,
  • Activate tide icons,
  • Right on tide station in Guam
  • => crash

Created crash dump and sent to Dave

Can do that for many (any?) stations in Australia, NZ, ....Could be related to the Eastern hemisphere. EDIT: Not related to Eastern hemisphere. Tide Icons in England, West of zero longitude, still cause a crash, next guess: Timezone?

As you should have seen from my message above,I've not had ANY crashes in build 917 and I'm wondering if it is because I'm using the basic 'OpenCPN_130_Setup'. Other people here have evidently had crashes with Vista.

Otherwise I'd appreciate your ceasing playing the role of monitor in this thread.

Minor bug/annoyance: "Use nearby waypoint" when creating routes for tight quarters

Dave

not sure what the threshold is for the message "Use nearby waypoint". When creating a route through tight quarters, using small small distances, every waypoint creation is being greeted by this message.

I don't have a good solution handy, because I like the idea of re-using waypoint in the proximity. And a waypoint could be used multiple times within one route.

But for sure we can exclude the last (same) waypoint as one to be used as a next waypoint.

Sorry Sindbad, I misunderstood.... Great to hear you have NO crashes in 917, using Vista
