Hardware compatability?

Hi all. I'm considering using openCPN and have spent quite a bit of time reading through the documentation, FAQs, and here in this forum. I probably missed it along the way, but is there a list somewhere of compatible external devices known to work well on this platform? I'll be building the system from scratch, so need to make sure I'm buying the correct radar, wind, GPS, AIS etc equipment.

Re: Hardware compatability?

Dear Serapium,
This question was asked fairly recently and everybody jumped in. I will try to find it, but perhaps you could do some searches on the forum for a similar topic.

1. Installing OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage

2. Installing Charts | Official OpenCPN Homepage

3. Installing Charts with Chart Downloader Plugin PlugIns | Official OpenCPN Homepage

4. Installing GPS Setting Up GPS | Official OpenCPN Homepage

5. Instruments - Devices must provide Nmea 0183 data via Serial or Network with a range of protocols and settings available. The description for connecting to hardware is in the Options > Data Connections section Data Connections | Official OpenCPN Homepage and for additional assistance NMEA Sentences | Official OpenCPN Homepage

6. See Supplimentary Hardware Supplementary Hardware | Official OpenCPN Homepage

7. Also read the Supplimentary Software Supplementary Software | Official OpenCPN Homepage which has information about using an android phone's gps, etc.

Hope this helps.

Re: Hardware compatability?

So I take it that's a big 'no'? There isn't a single list somewhere that says : "Here are the makes and models of radar that we know work with openCPN fairly seamlessly. Here are the makes and models of AIS receivers that we know work with openCPN."?

Re: Hardware compatability?

Thats a "no" for an actual list... However, the information is availabe on CF if you search for it.. The only real issue is RADAR, there are only a few that work seamlessly. The other stuff is NMEA 0183 and as long as your install is solid, it will work!

P.S. I use B&G for Wind, GPS, Depth, water temp, Vesper for AIS, Raymarine for AP... They all work fine! I don't feed RADAR (raymarine) to OpenCPN.

Re: Hardware compatability?

Thats gratitude. Last time I repeat, you could have been more specific and said thanks in the reply.

Re: Hardware compatability?

Rgleason, my apologies for offending you., and thank you for taking the time to try and answer my question. If you look back at my original post though, you'll see that I stated I had read the manual and FAQs already, and only asked a single question : Is there an existing hardware compatability list? I thought that WAS pretty specific.

Re: Hardware compatability?

Please read FAQ again and advise if changes are needed.
FAQ | Official OpenCPN Homepage
I have read the manual, Is there a compatible Hardware List?

I am having trouble with Installation, finding Charts, and connecting GPS & Instruments.
