Downloading Gribs on opencpn4

Hi don't know if anyone out there can help, but I'm having problems downloading gribfiles from Opencpn4 grib plugin. I'm trying to get them from saildocs, using the form which opens, and when i send it I get this message back "Request can't be sent. Please verify your email systeme parameters.
You should also have a look at your log file.
Save or Cancel to finish..."
Similar thing happens with Zygrib, but I can download gribs to a separate Zygrib programme on my laptop and then read them on opencpn. It really would be handy to use the plugin, so what am I doing wrong?

Another method for downloading the files is to install Zygrib and use zygrib to download the files to be used in opencpn. works perfect without any e-mail configuration.

He does this already (see his posting) but he doesn't tell us which OS and email software he uses.

you need to have a saildocs account set up with your default email in order to download saildocs into OpenCPN

Re: Downloading Gribs on opencpn4

Ok thanks to all, I'm using win 7 pro, normaly use gmail in firefox. I looked at opening an account with saildocs, only thin I could see refers to sailmail as far as accounts go, but I can get gribs by copying and pasting from the opencpn plugin into gmail, then opening the saved file, but not directly from the pluggin without the copy/paste bit. Not exactly sure what my default mail client is, hoe'd I check/change that?

Re: Downloading Gribs on opencpn4

We use Thunderbird email and that seems to be found quite readily by the plugin. I am not sure how gmail is found, the fact you use Firefox should not be the problem.
Is this Windows? Sorry I haven't read the whole thread. Have you set Gmail as your preference for email under Start > Default Programs?

It should open up in your default email client.

Re: Downloading Gribs on opencpn4

The problem lies with the lack of an installed email client. Gmail is not a email client, but a web interface and google has never offered (and probably never will) offer a PC/MAC side client for it. For Win 7 systems, you can install the old Outlook Express if you can still find and install for it. Otherwise, you will need to look at Thunderbird, Outlook, etc for an email client. Once that is installed and working, you can launch a request from with OpenPCN for data. It will launch the registered email client and you have to hit send. A few seconds later you will get an email back with an attached file with you will have to manually save to your GRIB data directory and then point GRIB to it. AFAIK, the email GRIB interface is intended for users that have very low bandwidthh (ex. using and HF Proctor modem while at sea). It is a lot easier to fire up ugrib or zygrib and grab the data as long as you have an internet connection. The only time I use saildocs for is getting current data which I can't seem to get from Ugrib. Even that is painful because you can't have two gribs open at once so you can get wind or current, but not both.

HTH,
Doug

Re: Downloading Gribs on opencpn4

You can concatinate two grib files and create one file OR you can run two instances of grib_pi and load the two grib files. I have described this in the normal grib thread. The request has been logged in tracker. Go ahead and vote for it if you want the feature to join gribs or display two gribs

Re: Downloading Gribs on opencpn4

I am having the same issue on my MAC.
I have the apple mail set up as my email client, so I'm not sure why it isn't working correctly.

The grib plugin cannot use the Apple Mail App, it can use only the Sendmail program which has to be configured first on a Mac.

And do I go about doing that?
I am a new Mac user and still getting used to it. So far I really like it, but it's an older machine with iOS 10.7 Lion.

Re: Downloading Gribs on opencpn4

It is described here: Mail Servers | Official OpenCPN Homepage (scroll down this page)
but rather complicated and not very helpful because the user has still to copy the received back email contents to a folder reachable by the grib plugin. So better use zyGrib.
