Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

And are we still holding out hope that NOAA will allow us to reopen our server and continue work on regions 1, 5, and 9?

I do not have such hope, apart from a future release as "historical charts".
I would be very pleased to if it happened though.

Thomas, besides telling us what not to do (torrents), what do you suggest we do?
We cannot, for obvious reason, continue the project, and share our efforts.
But there is an opening for all who learned to de-zoomify pictures, and who knows how to convert a chart picture to a chart. All for personal use only. Go back and read post #1254 in this thread. Draw your own conclusions.

As a bonus...

Browse this site - Marine Charts Online.
There are almost 30 samples of BA chart pictures freely available using the same methods mentioned above. Not the same high quality pics that we are used to, but just about acceptable.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Thomas,

thinking a little bit further:
we have created together a bunch of instruments and a work flow to use them.

Shouldn't it be possible to put these tools at reach of a user:
- either as a site where you can upload your captured charts to work with it -(no repository of charts of course) or
- as a tool set to download and to work locally with data/images one has captured?

Of course all this will not be as efficient as the approach we found bundling our efforts but if somebody wants to create just his private set of charts this might help.
And interchanging challenges and discussing "strange issues" with charts would held us all to learn a lot - as we did in the course of the project up to now.

Just an idea

If I am not wrong the copyright does not cover the reproduced charts from the NOAA's (www.tidesend.com/folios.htm). Then may be the problem is just a new software.

I'm sure it would be possible, with a lot of work. I guess that Netsurfer would be the one to ask. Right now he is very busy with studies exams etc, as far as I know.

But....the tools you need are all available right now, but not implemented in a "refined" graphic interface. To me, having used these command-line tools quite a lot, it's more a question of labour than a challenge to calibrate any chart. If you're just starting out though, it is a bit of a learning curve, and many questions arises, for sure.

This thread is getting a bit long anyway. Why don't you write a bit more about your suggestion and start a new thread?

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Hi all!

I think, there are problems when i want to download Charts using dezoomify.

If i want to download this chart: CHART i just copy the site adress as shown in Firefox and insert it in Dezoomify in the field, then click the button, and thats all. But after about half an hour, the counter stands at 0%.

So my questions:

Am i doing everything right?
How long does it take usually to download the chart?
Where is the chart saved?

Thanks in advance,
Michael

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

I am getting some charts on my own computer (using python, pil and the script you can find on the thread). I need about one hour for one chart depending on the size. So you have to be patient ...

So, now I got the Python Script to run. Works great for many of the charts, but for some I get errors in the script, they stop mainly betwenn 70 and 90%. If i want do dezoomify this NGA Chart, it stops at 80% and I get an error with the following code.
Code:
  INF: Waiting for a tile download to complete... (80%)

Has anybody an idea what this means, or what I can do to fix the error?

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

I am working at the moment with the older version of the script (Python 2.7 and PIL, not threaded) and i found a bug in that part of the code :

def getMaxZoom(self):
"""Construct a list of all zoomlevels with sizes in tiles"""

zoomLevel = 0 #here, 0 is the deepest level
width = int(ceil(self.maxWidth/float(self.tileSize))) #width of full image in tiles
height = int(ceil(self.maxHeight/float(self.tileSize))) #height
locWidth = self.maxWidth
locHeight = self.maxHeight
self.levels = []

while True:

self.levels.append((width, height))

if width == 1 and height == 1:
break
else:
# There is a problem when the last tile has one size < 1 pixel, Zoomify does not create that tile
# So I had to calculate the real number of tiles using the sizes of the redimensioned image
# I just hope that it is the only place where the problem appears.

# width = int(ceil(width/2.0))
# height = int(ceil(height/2.0))

locWidth = int(floor(locWidth/2.0))
locHeight = int(floor(locHeight/2.0))
width = int(ceil(locWidth/float(self.tileSize)))
height = int(ceil(locHeight/float(self.tileSize)))

self.levels.reverse() # make the 0th level the smallestt zoom, and higher levels, higher zoom

Maybe it has nothing to do with your problem, but the code seems to be the same in the new version of the script.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

It seems, that most of the charts are no more available on the server of NOAA. For example here . There is just there is just the empty zoomify field with no chart in it. Hopefully this are temporarily problems...

And now they have been completely removed, including the URLs.

I hope, they will reappear again.

They work, but you can only see area 1, 5, and 9

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

I happened upon this thread in my efforts to find electronic charts for the Pacific coast of Baja Mexico. NGA has a hand full of charts of the area (18000 series), some of which I already have in print. I am very surprised that these aren't freely available and that no one has petitioned the US Government to release them in accordance to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA.gov - Freedom of Information Act).
