Question Removing deck hardware

I have a windless bedded with either 3M 4200 or 5200? Considering thin blade keyhole saw working under it or sharp scraper blade and hammer. Ideas?

Re: Removing deck hardware

I pulled ours up with a hammer and a few thin chisels and a pry bar. It was really a pain. Take your time and work around it slowly. I tried to force ours up a a few times and bent some tools.

I use a machete, whack the handle end with a big hammer and work your way down. You will trash the machete but they are cheap. I removed my aluminum toe rails this way and it works great!

Re: Removing deck hardware

Use multiple tools/chisels/ screwdrivers to wedge under it. Cut away as much as you can. I would buy a cheap but very sharp kitchen knife or fillet knife. ... longer the better so you can lay the blade on the deck but have the handle up to hold it. Eventually it will start to pull free allowing you to cut more sealant.... move the wedge tools around and deeper as needed...

Try Debond Marine Formula (Marine Formula by DeBond). Score the compound with a razor knife all around, spray it with Debond, Wait 5 minutes, repeat, and then try wedging it off.

Re: Removing deck hardware

You're in trouble if 5200 was used. As mentioned, try to get a screw-driver or such started on a corner. Take a hack-saw blade with an "end" handle type and saw carefully, continuing to wedge your way along.

Piano wire with 2 toggled ends, wedge up as you go.

+1 on the piano wire.

It really starts to cut well when it heats up from friction.

If your windless has a flat base it should work well, with less damage than other saws would cause.

Echo...Piano wire, or a guitar string, or just wire, a toggle handle each end, saw it through back and forth, keep a small rag soaked in acetone or better yet Trichlorethylene (any strong solvent) at each exit/entrance to keep the wire wet. Knock in a wedge to keep the tension force on the adhesive. Works a treat.

Real hot SS putty knife seems to work wonders ...

Push it some, remove, heat again, push it some more, etc..

Man I sure wish I had asked you the last time I had to get through some 5200. Maybe I would not have broken the plexiglass and splintered the board.

Do you have a Fein multimaster? If not it will be the best tool investment you will ever make for your boat...

The flexible scraper blade attachment will work right through the bedding compound
