Its good to have an ambitious project in mind and not be a couch potato but have you considered another project as in employment?

I hate to be a killjoy mate... I'm usually the guy who says "Go for it"....
Too many factors against you... it'd take forever because of weather, tides, sea's etc.... you'll spend more time trying not to go backwards than you'll likely spend going forwards.
The Isle of Wight is a great idea though as a Charity Gig... time it well and the tides will take you just about all the way round...
Get you in the papers in a more positive light... instead of "Nutters on two planks and a barrel...."
And for the next Gig wind/kitesurf round britain anti clockwise... that is do-able in the time frame..
To keep it cheap and not too much like hard work... just have the one set of kit and relay...

I don't understand the bereavement of this guy...He Just finished Collage for peat sakes...let the lad have some dully earned fun for a while...Shoot I didn't have the brains for school I had no choice but to work...Personally don't see the hell fire rush to strap the lad in that rut....How many threads on this stupid forum are about someone twisting off form work after many years and going cruising.....Hmm.?

Yes he needs to come down to earth with some realities but I wish I were in his shoes youth and naivety all.

Lets help him get started on the right foot not flush him down the crapper.

Buck up...... who will be the first one to offer a sound sugestion?

Either choice of boat, SAS course, Whatever...lets give him a realistic game plan say 1 thru 10...non of this must sail with captin Bly for 4 years on bread and water crap either.

We can have sub catigory sujestions as well...Like boat models.( Ones that could be easely found in his local)..navagation class resorces...etc.

I am thinking that you are correct in all aspects of the above sentence

Great to see that the English sense of adventure (including wacky) is still alive.

Some said a 16 year old Aussie schoolgirl couldn't sail around the world solo non-stop although she had put a lot of effort into the planning before she went public (to the tune of 4 years of planning).

How about a quick reply from you at this early stage just to know that you are reading the various thoughts of the CF community?

Great first post BTW, certainly a bit different from the usual meet & greet and you are getting more that the normal in the way of first post replies

Righto, first and foremost, two of the three crew have actually finished uni last year and have been working for a year already, it's only the third guy who will graduate next May/June. So the naysayers saying 'get a job' Already have one mate.

Anyway, yes it is a project created on a drunken whim, but one I plan to research and think through, hence this very thread. We're planning on going next summer, July or August possibly, it isn't something we're going to do tomorrow, that would just be silly.

If a catamarang is not a feasible vessel, what would be more suitable?

I think you need more understanding of whats involved ,here are a few steps which may help
1 Set up a large fan
2 Stand approx 2 metres away facing the fan on high speed
3 Drop your pants and try to pee on the fan
If you wet the fan you have some chance of succeeding . Maybe you could select other crew member by the same process

Were it me--and I've done just enough sailing in British waters to be glad it's not--the first question I'd be asking is whether or not you're willing to hot-berth. In other words, the fellow coming off watch sleeps in the berth of the fellow going on watch. Consider the strong possibility that it will often be days and days in between showers, and that in British waters, once the bedclothes become sodden, they tend to stay sodden.

So, are you going to need a boat with four berths? Three? Two?

Answer that question and we can give you a size range to be looking for.

Anyway, I should probably talk a little more about the raft. It isn't a piece of rope, three nails and an oil drum. The 'blueprint' and I use that term generously, has both pieces of the catamarangs consisting of 8 oil drums each, at a length of about a metre each, so she should be about 8 metres long, which when combined with a sail and a massive Diesel engine strapped to the back I see no reason why we can't make at least some progress. Does this change anyones opinion? And might I remind you Jeremy Clarkson crossed the Channel in a Toyota.
