Re: The Marine iPad . . .

An app I have for a iPhone 4 called Dynolicios has been no less than 2 tenths of a second off at 150 mph in the 1/4 mile (drag car race on a track).

Position error went from 30 feet to 98 for most iOS devises with the last update btw.

Do you mean hardware or software update?

I'm trying to see how the position error would change - it's a function of the chipset and satellite configuration. Do you have a reference for the change? I'm intrigued.

iOS updates don't change hardware btw, you know this, I think.

Re: The Marine iPad . . .

Yep I know that. (but they also update hardware all the time!)

The precision of the fix is down to the chipset (how well it can synchronise its clock) and the 3D topology of the satellites in view. (Throw in some variable atmosphere but that is nit picking). How does the software on the OS affect this?

Because it is what interprets the chip data. Give me the worlds best gps chip and I'll make it off as much as you want with the software. Any questions?

That's a rather silly statement - of course you can introduce errors if that is your aim. The fact remains that the chip set will output position data that is independent of the OS.

You still haven't provided any reference for this apparent reduction in accuracy.

Does this mean I just need to leave it running longer? How can I check position error regardless of the source hardware/software?

Is the GPS in an iPad dependent on wireless or cell service? For instance, will it work offshore?

Here is some iPad Route Navigation feed back that may help and also save you some money when you purchase apps.

The GPS in the iPad is a full proper kosher as good as anyone else GPS. What makes it *better* is the cell service.

A normal GPS chip set can take minutes to get a lock i.e. calculate its position if it has been off for a while or has been moved whilst off or fully reset. This is becuase it has no idea where the satellites are (their ephemeris) and to download this data is has to scan through the available satellite identifiers to see which ones are visible.

The cell triangulation built into the iPad tells the system where it is to within a few hundred meters. This gives a kick start to the gathering of data needed to obtain lock, so when the iPad is in cell coverage it will be faster to give you position data, when not in coverage it will still be as fast as a standalone GPS.

Re: The Marine iPad . . .

I have a IPad2 that I am just starting to work with. It is wifi only. I have been thinking about connecting it to my onboard GPS and that can be done through a serial wifi adapter - pretty pricey at more than $200 -but it does work with iNavX. I am wondering about another option - connecting via bluetooth using BTSTACK GPS. Don't know if it will work with iNavX, but if it does I may try to get a GPS signal off the Spot connect I am also thinking about.

Re: The Marine iPad . . .

The only two Bluetooth GPS I know that work with iPad are discussed here ..

Bluetooth GPS for iPad - MacSailing.net - Powered by FusionBB

The cheapest option for iPad WiFi only models is the Bad Elf GPS receiver.

Are your running a PC on your boat as part of you nav solution. If so most of the SW I've used will also rebroadcast the NMEA data so another device can connect to it. NavMonPC is a free program which can do this.
