Thanks to all for the feedback -- with votes for a variety of approaches. There's never one clear unanimous answer on how to do something "right" on a boat. No wonder I've been hauled out for 7 months now, and still so far to go ...

I have a new boat with B&G 4G radar. A RI-10 box has been installed with a radar cable input, a SimNet output and a Network output.

When I get into situations like this I use the Garmin splice kit, cable coupler and shielded RJ45 terminals. It is one of the better water tight / resistant products I have found for coupling RJ45...

Splicing ethernet cable

Have 15 years in the wire industry and was heavily involved in bringing Cat 5 plenum wire into production for a major wire company. Splice if you have to, but that hurts the signal significantly...the next 20 years have been as a IT person, trust me you want good one piece wire runs...
