Looking for opinions on cpt autopilots

I have a Mogan 41 oi I am looking for a basic auto pilot. The Cpt seems to have the best rep as a stand alone pilot.I am looking for opinions of those who have used this pilot on similar boats.

Re: Looking for opinions on cpt autopilots

It was going to be my primary choice back in the day as I was outfitting for a trans-At, when it was the previous owners. I ended up making do with my Autohelm ST4000 wheel pilot, which crapped out in Spain. Was able to rebuild. The company was shutting down...so it scared me away to buy.
The homework I did back then (20yrs ago) said it was a very stable piece of gear, however the alignment is critical.
Very glad someone picked it up as there are NO other choices for boats in 36-43 range without massive expense of hydraulics.

Re: Looking for opinions on cpt autopilots

I have one, it very well built and powerful. It was simple to setup but the hardest for me was getting a place for the mounting brackets. That said I have a funky Edson pedestal for an A4 with two downtubes on the wheel side for shifter/throttle.

If you have a typical pedestal, it would be a breeze to install.

Jeff and Eron are very knowledgeable about installation geometery, so read the guides on the website and then call and ask questions. This current version has more configuration with it's firmware... where I believe the earlier versions were pretty much all analog.

No complaints and I would buy again.

Re: Looking for opinions on cpt autopilots

Happy New Year. Then, let me be the very first to suggest that perhaps, if you haven't already, perform a search on the subject matter. (Somebody's gotta be first!)

These are highly regarded autopilots, and have been for many years, if not many decades.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff a few years ago. Nice folks with a great product.

And a very good website with useful information. Have you read it?

Good luck.

So far very satisfied with mine. Have only travelled the East coast of FL, St Augustine to the keys, but it performs well in the conditions I've been in. On the way to the Bahamas, if we decide to go much further (Panama in our sights) I will probably supplement it with a windvane.

Re: Looking for opinions on cpt autopilots

I have one on a '84 Mariner Neptune 41, 14 tons, we have had the boat 6 years and before us it had cruised Mexico extensively for many years with this autopilot. It worked when we purchased boat but I sent it to them for service and had them install new seals and knobs. It's simple and works fantastic. Our plans are to take off in a year and looking at getting new model of CPT pilot with more features.

Yes, "more features" = more firmware. ;^) A handy design feature the newest owners of have been using successfully.

Re: Looking for opinions on cpt autopilots

Thanks for all the answers. I had done a search and read the previous threads but wanted opinions that were recent. Will be ordering 1 within the next few weeks. Thanks again.
