I am looking for a pedestal mounted chart plotter only, good size color display minimum 7". No other function but GPS, with preloaded US and Bahamas charts,
Any advice?

Re: good chart plotter?

I have a Garmin 741xs, although it does have radar and depth capabilities. The other advantages are pinch to zoom and touchscreen, no buttons..and Garmin Helm app which will talk to/mirror tablet. It will take AIS from vhf over NMEA 0183. It has a nice bright 7" screen. It would be best to get Bahamas chip. Good hunting!

Re: good chart plotter?

I have used Rays, Garmins and Sims at the helm. A touchscreen Ray was the worst. Sim was indifferent. I would buy a Garmin for my own boat.

I also found Ray and Sim interfaces counter-intuitive. This is very personal, check more than one make to see which one is 'easy' for you.

I have used a SH inside and loved it. I am not sure how well they look in the cockpit (sunlight, etc.).

I have a si-tex Colormax wide 7" with embedded charts, it will also use Jeppensen NT Max chart cards. $300.00 + the ride. Click image for larger version

Re: good chart plotter?

Your question is like asking a car forum: What car should I buy I want four doors?

Really.

You need to determine what YOU like: interface, menus, touch screen or buttons or hybrid... The list is endless.

Most suggest you spend some time in a chandlery and try them out and find what YOU like.

And I continue my repeated rants:

1. That handhelds are simply small chartplotters. (unless your eyesight is really gone, gone, gone...)

2. That putting the GPS at the binnacle makes you "a slave behind the wheel" and there are better places to put it unless you have a swinging mount.

Good luck.
