I use an em-trak R100 AIS receiver. I have also set up a shore station to receive AIS using a specialized antenna. I describe the antenna in another article:

Your Garmin 172C will not display AIS data; it has two NMEA data inputs but they both only work at 4800 baud. AIS NMEA sentences are sent at 38400 baud.
