Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

B,
I wondered what has/had happened to you.
I also wonder what the weight will be and the new water line.

"you can't do that, you can't live on a boat, you can't just unplug and go to Mexico for 4yrs and home school your kids, what are you crazy".

I used to think I could talk some sense into them, reason with them, but now I just say, "You are right, You couldn't do it" with a smile. By the time they figured out what I just said to them, I'm walking away...again with a smile.

Shonky repairer held me up, And I couldnt do any thing till I took him to court and got the contract Voided,

Which I did, The man is still trading as an undisharged Bankrupt,
Yes I have all the documents to prove it, Which doesnt help me,

I dont think there will be much difference in the weight with the new repairs,
It has bigger, longer and more stiffeners which give it the strength,
Bulkheads are glassed to the hulls which make the lot of it stronger,
I can have the boat lifted any where now, Not just on the lifting points which Gemini recommend to avoid cutting thru the hulls with the lifting straps,
It will sit a lot higher in the water as I have taken a lot of the weight off it,

PO lived on it permanently for 8 years in Fiji, on a swing mooring,
3 of every thing spare, Plus more tools than I can poke a stick at, And other assorted gear I will never use, Like all the power tools on board,
All this spare gear and food for a month and fuel for 750 Nmiles, I was over the Plimsol line by about 2 inches coming home, It still sailed Ok,
It didnt bounce around, hahaha
New Hulls, New anchor, new steering cables, all new electrics, New ropes, Any thing needs replacing, Its been replaced,
Had the wind instruments checked and they work OK, All cables in the mast have been replaced, New VHF antenna and nav light on the mast,
Still need a new stove,
But I am getting there,

Cheers, Brian,

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

I started reading the forums in about 2012. Bought the boat. Read books and forums. Sailed the boat for two years while getting it ready for cruising. Left Chicago area in November oh 2015. Made it to Mobile, AL, then Cozumel, then Belize, then Panama, then Ecuador. As I write this note, my wife and I are having tuna and pork lunches in an open air cafe on Nuku Hiva, French Marquesas. We have travelled about 7,000 nmi to get here. Every place we have been has been completely amazing. Took 28 days and 16 hours to make it from mainland Ecuador to Hiva Oa. What an incredible experience. It is also very hard, no doubt about it. Works for us. The cruising community is a great group of people.

LOL

That's not a "wannabee" story - that's an "Eyedunnit"

Well done!

At least you're encouraging the rest of us 'wannabees'

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

I am a wannabe. I also have little boating experience. Ton of reading and teaching myself and asking questions to those who know more. The survey on my first boat is this coming Thursday. Retirement is 1-5 years away. In WI our boating season is short, so I have planned plenty of time to get my experience before starting the Great Loop my first year of retirement.

Am I one ? Collect my boat nxt month , first we get it home ( 6/700 mm ) , then get it kitted out how I ( we ) like it , see where it takes us and how we like it . As for a cruiser , well I think I am more of a loveabee, still to see if I am a wannabe .

You only need a week or 2 experience. The only difference between day cruising something like the Great Loop and doing day sails at your home port is that you stop in a new place each day.

Where are you in Wisconsin? I am currently in Door County, sailing and restoring. Fair winds!

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

I'm still a Wannabee but I'm getting closer every week to making this dream a reality. We've got the boat, refurbished the sails, replaced the mainsail traveler, all the batteries, fixed the leaking diesel injector pump, replaced all the rubber fittings on the heat exchanger, powder coated and cleaned the heat exchanger, got new bilge pumps, bought a solar charge controller, solar panels will be purchased in June and fixing up the townhome and our home for renting and hope to be on the boat November of this year.
Already got our trip back to Pensacola charted and working on the Bahamas / Caribbean plotting.
The Admiral would leave tomorrow.

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

I'm a 'wannabe' original plan still in place and working towards its successful completion. The last parts actually buying the boat should happen this year and I guess that will be 'the proof of the pudding' scary close in fact. Now if the stock market could come up a bit and the post katrina boat prices to settle down again that would be great...! Hopefully see you out there.

P.s. When I first discovered this place I had a vacuum of knowledge and a whole raft of questions and CF has been a very valuable resource both in knowledge and hanging around (mostly) nice people. Now I kind of hang around for entertainment reading the tech posts like the lightening one going on at the minute, but I have no experience in that field so tend to keep my mouth shut.

So still here haven't turned into blue smoke just yet...
