Good lord. I thought you had the whole history when we first communicated.

Do you want this info online?

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados

I have it plotted where I left the boat on the 21/12 and the ping from the 23/12.
I have the track from the days prior on my navionics. But I don't have the AIS pings. Please email me them over[emoji1303][emoji1303]

Ok, PM sent. But I don't think that you're going to learn much, since there is only the one ping that you already have from after you left the boat.

Did I miss something? Any idea why there were several pings before the boat was abandoned but only 1 ping after?

Only 9 AIS 'Pings' in 2000 odd nm's... from departure to abandonment.. seems if one's not a paid subscriber offshore coverage by 'The Eye in the Sky' is minimal..

It's just how it works with Class B and the satellite. They went a week without a single detection while still underway, too. Class A shows up much better. Maybe a good reason to spend the extra coin for one of them, eh?

So, if I understand correctly, there could be another random ping at any time if the sender is still working? Sure not the best system for locating a boat.

You understand correctly.
It's due to the lower transmit power of class B. Class A shows up much more often. I don't really think that anybody envisioned this situation as being one of AIS's uses, as a homing beacon for an abandoned boat, I mean.

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados

AIS uses VHF antennas. VHF antennas achieve their gain by focusing their output into a horizontal donut, avoiding raising power upwards or downwards. Consequently, there is very little output directed towards satellites.

I don't know how to do that. I go to the web page (cruisersforum.com), log in, and find the personal messages under "quick links".
