Re: SWAN 40 new owner

Hi you are correct its not an S&S Swan but a Nautor Swan. The lines are similar it looks like.

The S&S Swans are lovely. Hope we meet out on the water some day to compare notes.

The boot (gator) that connects to the tie rod on one end and the rack and pinion cylinder on the other end. I found one that was perfect and gave something like five inches of expansion/contraction. Something like that might work for you, or perhaps the rubber boot that is used on cars with manual gear shift levers mounted on the floor.

Good luck.
Hi thanks, great idea. Will visit some car yards here in Jamaica and see what I can find similar.

I'd be tempted to replace it with a solid fitting and a dyneema tackle or similar that could easily be tensioned or released to bring the babystay back.
Hi, Yes I was thinking about that. It seemed strange for the baby stay to go down to the bulkhead and be attached there.

It can double up to fit a storm job in very rough weather as it has shackles. Think I will need to get my inventive cap on to look at it.

One issue is I have a full deck boat cover to protect the teak decks so you need to unhitch the baby stay each time I leave the yacht. This is what wears the diaphragm. If it was in place the whole time it would not wear as much but its cheaper to get a rubber fitting than a whole new teak deck.

Thanks for the help.

As you can appreciate being in Jamaica parts are not the easiest.

Look forward to any assistant.
For technical and construction information on old Swans you must contact Mr Lars ******

Also known as the professor , Lars spent his career with Náutor , probably built your boat and knows all the suppliers of old swan parts

I would post Lars email but this is a public forum and it might cause problems
To communicate with Lars , register and join the Swan Forum

Check out Plumbing suppliers. Could be a Dectite or similar, silicon rubber bellows for waterproofing roof penetrations.

Re: SWAN 40 new owner

All Swans were built by Nautor. All the early ones were designed by Olin Stevens of S&S. His brother Rod spent a lot of time in Finland overseeing construction. Also, I thought about using the baby stay for a storm job and decided it was too close to the mast. I ended up installing a Solent stay. It hits the deck a couple feet aft of the regular stay and is tied down below to the stem with a turnbuckle.

Hi,

On Facebook search for Nautor’s Swan Yachts in the groups. There a Swan Yachts by Ron Holland Group, which I’m an admin for so happy to let you in, I believe there is an equivalent Frers owner’s group. I’ve also got Lars’ contact details and he’ll be happy to hear from you.

Not that it applies here, but for completeness there is an S&S group that can be found by googling S&S Swan Association.

Re: SWAN 40 new owner

Theose bellows/boots/gaiters are used by power boats for the hoses and wire harnesses going to the outboard motors, if there is a boat part shop you may have luck there.

Hi,

I have something similar, there is a screw thread about 2 feet forward of the babystay. A loop screws into this which I assumed might be for the storm jib.

I think because I put the cover on the yacht every time we leave and we detach the baby stay it wears the rubber more quickly.
