Powell Cay, Abacos, who are George and Jean Dawes?

I just returned from a sailing vacation in the Abaco Islands. We visited Powell Cay - our favorite anchorage of the trip. Posted to a tree, on the beach, on the Sea of Abaco side of the island was a very nice metal plaque dedicated to Col. George Dawes and his wife Jean Dawes. Apparently he was a retired marine (USMC) and they were sailors who loved the island of Powell Cay. I have not been able to find any more information about who these people are. Just curious about who these people were. Does anyone have any information?

Thanks tenchiki - that is definitely the right person - George Moncrief Dawes - there cannot be too many of those around. I searched all over the internet and never found that article.

Still curious about who placed the plaque on Powell Cay and why. I'll put the question out on abacoforum.com and see if I get any answers.

Re: Powell Cay, Abacos, who are George and Jean Dawes?

I am so happy and surprised to see this post. George and Jean were my parents. We were a sailing family and spent many summers in the Bahamas. Powell Cay being a particular favorite. My brother has kept up the sailing tradition. As a way to honor our parents and their love for the island and the sea, he had the plaque made.

That is one lovely story. And a lovely homage to sailing, family and passing it along.

I would be amazed if four years after I posted a question, it was answered by a family member. It shows what a small world we live in. Well done!
