Thanks, yes, I was more asking about the Chathams for my own curiosity, rather than thinking she would use them.

Leaving the anchor explains the need for the moorings.

This system to the NE still forecasts to feed long period of northerlies.

Probably not a good idea. She might have had some bad advice. Maybe a lighter anchor with some chain and rope rode stowed low down amidships would have been better. I know that an anchor has saved me a few times as I used to sail without an engine in a 34ft sloop. But not judging here...... she's looks to be about to become a sea goddess of some sort. Her husband is no doubt looking down from above. Love is truly something!!!! Go girl go.

Re: Jeanne Socrates' "Nereida" Damaged in Record Attempt

well, I have been impressed with her from the time she started, but given the condition of her main, the boom, the gooseneck, the electron supply, the vane... I hope she makes it far enough north to find a nice warm port to call home for a while. What she has already accomplished is amazing to my way of thinking. But if I were to bet, I guess I'd bet on her patching it all up and making it.

I'll be jumping and waiving off race rocks when she rounds them that's for sure!
I wouldn't suggest to anyone to do it the way she does. (no anchor, she should add to the heading, now I wonder what else is missing?)

In Victoria the day before departure I personally stowed Jeanne's anchor and rode for the voyage. It's always been a critical component on all her voyages.
El Pinguino, where did you read the left it behind thing?

Re: Jeanne Socrates' "Nereida" Damaged in Record Attempt

Got me thinking that perhaps someone may have seen her vessel without an anchor up front.
We took it off the bow roller and lashed into the fwd deck accessible chain locker. The chain rode is still properly led and zap strapped out that roller and over the bow rail. When required she could pick it up and toss it over the side breaking all the ties.
Tried to get weight lower and aft. She also has a roll bar style of anchor that doesn't play nicely with the downwind sprit.

still, in her shoes, (and I have not been in her shoes but I know what it's like to be tired and not want to wrestle with an anchor if I don't have to,) I'd rather be picking up a mooring too if a good one's available!

Re: Jeanne Socrates' "Nereida" Damaged in Record Attempt

merlyn,

I can report that she is really is good spirits. We've been speaking via ham radio in the mornings. It must really feel good to have turned the corner, got her stuff fixed and be on her way back to Victoria.

Re: Jeanne Socrates' "Nereida" Damaged in Record Attempt

Thanks JPA and Don, yes crazy tired I'm sure
Let me also add again to this anchor thingy and just speculating.. It could go over the side in under a minute and am sure she was prepared to do that in even less time when approaching bricks. Getting it back onboard and configured the way it was would take hours. She might have also considered the use of any amps like a windlass at that particular time.
Go Jeanne!
Chris

Re: Jeanne Socrates' "Nereida" Damaged in Record Attempt

One question.
Does anyone communicate with Jeanne through HAM and the NET, I mean is it possible to use a web browser to talk (verbally) to her on HAM SSB ?

Re: Jeanne Socrates' "Nereida" Damaged in Record Attempt

You can listen to her as she talks to folks on the ham nets using SDR websites like

http://kiwisdr.northlandradio.nz:8073/

She currently comes up on Tony's Net, 14315 KHz USB at 2100 Zulu and on the Comedy Net, 7087 KHz LSB at 2140 Zulu... not every day but fairly often.

However, there is no means for you to reply... it is listen only.
