Re: headed to Bahamas in June

BEST would be South or Southwest winds, but really anything without a northerly component would work.

Re: headed to Bahamas in June

I can't recall having heard of a hurricane in the Bahamas in June. Yes, there are lots of thunderstorms in the Bahamas in June, many of which pack winds that gust in excess of 30kts. As far as being surprised by a hurricane that early in the season, though, I would have to say the chances of that happening are slim.

I've crossed from S FL to the Bahamas at least a dozen times. Never sailed, always ended motoring or motorsailing. You could spend weeks waiting for a sailing breeze. I would just wait for calm enough weather and go. You might get lucky but go when you get good conditions in the Gulf Stream.

Indeed.
Although the official hurricane season runs from June to November; the probability of hurricanes striking the Bahamas in June, and even July is very low.

Re: headed to Bahamas in June

That's where I usually depart from bound for West End. A S-SW wind is ideal, but doesn't happen that often, especially in June, and when it does a strong NW wind usually isn't far behind.

What I make sure to avoid is anything much over 15 knots from the SE through East or anything over 10 knots from any northerly direction.

Much depends on your time frame and your attitude about waiting for ideal conditions or going sooner in something a bit bumpier, though a strong northerly goes well beyond a bit bumpy and should be avoided at all costs, but that's more common in winter than in June.

If the winds are blowing consistently out of the SE, a night crossing may allow some lighter conditions.

I like to check a couple online forecasts as well as the VHF weather channels.

Love Green Turtle. Kept my boat there for a while.

Re: headed to Bahamas in June

I should add, when it's forecast to continually blow above 15 knots from the SE, I usually head to down to Fort Lauderdale and leave from there instead of Lake Worth.
