GPS / Sat Nav upgrade

Hi,

I have just brought a yacht and it has a Navigator MK9 GPS -D on board. There are 2 screens one at the nav table and one on the steering column.

The screen on the one by the nav table you cant read the screen as its numbers are too faint.

This is the screen by the chart table.

I was wondering does anyone know of an upgraded system where I can literally remove the 2 current boxes and replace with a newer one so don't need to go through the hassle of having to set up new wiring, positions etc

Preferably I would like to upgrade to a chart plotter style where you can see the actual maps and relative position rather than just the digital position.

I have one already on the yacht but this could be a backup if I can replace these.

Any help would be appreciated.

You could replace with just 2 standalone chartplotters and would only have to connect the power leads. Are they connected to anything else like your Auto pilot or AIS ? If so then you'll need to do some additional network wiring, what brand instruments do you have and do you wish them to be integrated ?

They are wired to a GPS transmitter that sits at the back of the yacht, I am not sure if this would be compatible for a newer system, I might need to change that as well.

The perfect scenario is just to be able to swap for a new model that I can wire in and bobs your uncle.

I also have a standard horizon system that is in the cockpit but would be good to have a new system by the chart table as well and an additional one in the cockpit.

I was wondering if the Navigator brand has an updated system or they don't exist anymore.

Thanks for the suggestions.

That's probably a receiving antennae, most new units have an internal antennae that functions fine in or outside. Don't think Leica is in the market anymore, superseded by Simrad. Sounds like it not doing anything but giving you a position and the only bonus of the 2 being connected is if you set a waypoint on one it's displayed on both.

yep exactly, it just gives the position and you can program waypoints in for longer journeys. Correct its a receiving antenna on the back. Its small so not obstructive in any way.

Will have a look at Simrad and see what they can offer.

Thanks for the help.

Re: GPS / Sat Nav upgrade

I replaced the later version of the Leica on my boat at the start of last year. The successor system does exist but is a commercial product and eye wateringly expensive. I was able to install a new high end N2K gps, N2K bus, B&G plotter and some other devices for less than a single unit. The cable runs were a pain though!

Thanks, yep I think I will need to look at a replacement brand. It would be great if I could use the existing wiring plus the new units have a receiver built-in so we could remove the one from the back. It's not large so is no issue.

The search continues. Have a great day.

Re: GPS / Sat Nav upgrade

When upgrading, it will be prudent to buy systems that utilize more than one navigation satellite system. There are three: GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo. See thread https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ml#post3132853 for more.
