Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.

thanks for the info on inreach. Very useful. Went down the Inreach path because it the Baha haha had made it a requirement. It now looks like they have dropped this requirement.

I am leaning towards the Iridum Go. Seems like it does everything Inreach does except it is less portable for going on a walk about. I don't really care much about the hiking stuff.

Any thoughts on Iridium Go????

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.

The Baha Haha 2017 seems to require two-way communication:

Baha Haha 2017 Notice of Rally
Communication: In addition to all the other
proscribes gear, each boat that doesn’t have a
funcitoning SSB must have some form of two-way
communication that permits contact by email
while at sea. For example, the Garmin InReach.
This is a new requirement for 2017.
Obviously an SSB w/modem, satphone with email or Iridium Go would satisfy this requirement too.

I hope they meant prescribed and not proscribed.
Spellcheck should have caught "funcitoning" but the author would have to know the difference between prescription and proscription.

I just pasted the text from the notice of rally. Yes I did notice the misspellings....

Oh yes, I knew the errors were in the original and were not of your doing. There are several other errors in the rest of their document...

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.

There always has been a lot of typos and inconsistencies with the Baja Haha web pages. For a well read publication, it is amazing how poor their review and proofing is online....

Imagine the Garmin offers maps not Delorme inReach Explorer. Will also get the micro USB Charging & Data Sync Cable for Delorme inReach Explorer to link to laptop. The Delorme inReach Explorer allows smart phone texting and weather viewing, yes? This may be our go to weather and com device offshore. We will probably have two of them. Thanks for a great site, click here for a beer.
No data plans for InReach its messaging only. You contract with Delorme/Garmin for the messaging plans.

Weather is spot forecasts only (your location). You can view other weather data/sources.

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.

Just used a Delorme Inreach Explorer for a gulf of Alaska trip. We had mylar charts, OpenCPN on a laptop with a Sirf4 usb gps, two cellphones with gps enabled and each running a different nav app, and an old cellphone mated to the Inreach (trialling everything so I could prove to the husband we did not need a huge screened panorama chartplotter with all the bells and whistles..)

We could have just had the inreach+old phone and been fine, once the maps were downloaded and a few extra messages preprogrammed on the Inreach (yes, you can make custom messages ahead of time for various potential situations).

The inreach performed flawlessly. We never lost reception, and the 2way comm+gps+maps+trip tracking/waypoints+weather is just incredibly compact for $70/month and a few dollars a month standby.

Then, when we get where we are going, I can throw it in my backpack and go hiking or some other land-based adventure.

Big fan!

Re: Delorme In Reach for Offshore.

Re message costs. Preset messages have no additional charge. Ive set mine up to use presets for all my usual check-ins. Each preset has a distribution list defined for it. I modify distrubution for each trip. Using presets makes it way easier to send a message and costs nothing additional.

Doing this, and just occassional free form messages, Ive yet to exceed my basic plan (~$17/mo).

Super pro tip. I'll use that next time for sure!

Are you doing the gps puck for opencpn? I used the bu-354s4, I think it is, and once I ironed out some kinks, it worked flawlessly.
