Boat name change?!?

Chasing some advice, we recently bought a boat only to find out the previous owners had changed the name, literally peeled one sticker off and slapped a new one on. Rego papers still bear the old name. does the wrath of the sea gods go to them or us? do i change it back or disregard the second name and come up with a new one altogether?!?! could not be more confused. many thanks in advance.

Re: Boat name change?!?

If it is documented you go to the CG documentation site and follow the directions for name change & send $$. I can't remember how much but it was not too bad (5 years ago).

If the PO didn't follow through on his name change in officialdom, it is still on the books as the old name. They may have let the CG documentation lapse. I don't think most states cares what you name the boat.

We spent more on the champagne & food for the re-name party. You don't need to hire a documentation service. This can be totally DIY. BTW there are lots of fun sites to help you through the procedures & incantations to appease the sea gods. We wrote the old name on an 'ingot' of aluminum using dry mark pen and hurled to to the sea - add some wine and magically, Neptune erased the name from his ledger.

I love the superstitious people.

Be sure to swing a black cat by throwing it through a mirror during you renaming ritual.

I'm just kidding, breaking mirrors on the dock is frowned upon.

It's always good to rename a boat immediately whithout a registration change if you steal it.

Re: Boat name change?!?

Do not fool with the gods during the re-naming. My first boat, changed the name from the previous owner with the appropriate pomp and circumstance. No problem. Floated my second boat in the slip after purchase planning on doing the ceremony a few days later. Big mistake. Storm down the river, $17K in damage. Performed the ceremonies on the repaired boat, had a beautiful rest of the Summer. Superstitious? Maybe. Why take the chance. And it's fun.

Don't forget to have a virgin pee in the bilge when renaming.
