Of course there was Myspace before Facebook. If you have a good idea on how to gather and organize it better why not give it a try. If nothing else, you'll become personal experts on the information.

If I had read posts here before buying my first sailboat I probably wouldn't have ever gotten one, and I've been very happy living on my boat the last two years.

www.venturefarther.com and www.squidd.io come to mind as well. Both have OpenCPN plugins.

@Jim - Thank you for your comments. I totally agree that the basic information has to be reliable and only enriched by subjective comments of other users.
Now, there are ways to source information and make it as up to date as possible without manual "full time" work.
I also don't think that you can include all the knowledge in one place, but perhaps help people use the existing information and make it a little bit more accessible and quicker to find.

I am fully aware that this is not an innovative idea, nor am I the first to mention it, I merely asked for ideas of what other Cruiser think to be useful

@johnny AoB - Thank you for your input! Those are excellent points, and I think that most of it can be done. I particularly like sailing-channels idea and the integration with blogs. We will think it through how to best make it work!

Re: A great website with sailing destinations and recommendations? :)

If you want quick basic information on all ports and anchorages, the first idea in my mind is to combine a simple wiki with a map. If it is simple and works well, people might start updating and using that information.

The wiki would have a simple template for all typical information of the port / anchorage. It could include links to other sources of information. A small local map with depths, piers and other facilities could be added. Dates (latest check / update) would be used to indicate the freshness of information.

The map would be just a simple clickable map (Google maps based or similar) that would contain links to the wiki pages.

If you want the app to work also offline, some more work would be needed to store and display the maps and wiki.

Out of the given example sites zuluwaterways was closest to what I had in mind (simple, links in the map).

My point is that if it is simple enough, and would allow easy (wiki style) updates, it could work.
