work outside usa

I would like to know what you all think. i am a carpenter and would like to load my family onto a boat and cruise for a few years. How realistic is it to think that i coiuld pick up work along the way even outside of the us? I can't figure how anyone other than the rich can afford to cruise without working. i have no problems with the rich. I just havent gotten there yet.

Finding work along the way is hit or miss and not recommended if you can't afford to cruise without that income. Many countries will not let you so you will have to do it under the table and will have to deal with that if caught. Every other cruising boat out there is trying to do the same thing so you have lots of competition. Sometimes you wll get lucky and most times you will not. It also depends on where you plan to cruise. Locals will be out there looking for the same jobs at mostly much less than you probably would want to work for. It's OK to pick up a little along the way, but don't count on it to keep you cruising. Nothing could be worse that you and your family in a third world country flat broke. Have a look at the post on our web site "Cruising On a Working Class Budget" to see how we do it. We always return to the US to prop up the cruising kitty.
