Boat purchase in one state, move to another.

If we purchase a boat located in Seattle, Washington and mover her down to Portland, Oregon right away, what will be the tax requirements? We live in Idaho. We are selling our house in Idaho, buying the boat in Washington, moving it to Oregon immediately to load her up and sail around the world. Well, maybe down to Mexico to start.

Anyone know what type of taxes we may end up having to pay? It will be an expensive boat so the sales taxes could be wicked. I would like to do this in such a manner as to minimize the amount of money on sales tax. Oregon doesn't have sales tax and my family lives there so it just seems logical to get her ready to travel there. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Boat purchase in one state, move to another.

Do not know specifically about the regulations in WA but most states, if you buy a boat there but are not a resident of that state, AND you move it out of that state withing a deadline (usually 30 days) THEN you will be liable for the tax, if any, in the state where the boat is docked and/or registered.

So if OR has no sales tax on a boat and you keep the boat there, make that your legal residence and register the boat there then you should be clear of any sales tax. You might want to check on any potential for state income tax or property tax.
