Bernard Cornwells-Stormchild, is a good read with a bit of a twist.

Re: Fiction for Cruisers

Wow. A lot of great suggestions! However it’s funny that this started because he asked where else he could promote his new book. I look for these forums for suggestions, so you’re in the right place

Re: Fiction for Cruisers

I really enjoy Before the Wind by Jim Lynch.

It's about a family of sailors. It's about sailing, racing, marina life, cruising, plus those folks with the dream of sailing around the world with zero boating experience. It's also about Albert Einstein and math. The Mom's a teacher

Typhoon (1912) by Josef Conrad is also a good one.

Been reading Travis Magee novels since high school. (I even adopted his retirement plan). Also a good picture of what Ft. Lauderdale and south Florida were like before drugs, immigrants and money over ran it.

Re: Fiction for Cruisers

Thanks for the tips.
Some of the stuff I'm not keen on but look forward to trying out Barry Crump.
Trying to find Three Minutes Silence on Amazon gave me no results; is it worth a hunt elsewhere
As a change from the boaty stuff I have enjoyed Mick Herron and his tales of the grubbier side of MI5. Well plotted and well drawn characters with good throwaway humour as well. It's the Slough House tales that I like

Re: Fiction for Cruisers

Three Minutes Silence is well worth reading and there are a number of copies for $1 plus postage on ABE books.
The author Georgi Vladimoc really upset the soviets with the book and it was heavily censored.

Re: Fiction for Cruisers

Yesterday, I made a post in response to a thread about what to do while hunkered down for covid-19. It gives new meaning to cabin-fever, yet what better time to pick up a book... after you're done reading Cruisers Forum, of course.

With relieving boredom as a goal:

Neil Barry's Chicken of the Sea is available on Amazon with a big Covid-19 discount. Beginning yesterday, the first book in the trilogy is available in digital form at $2.99 (down from $5.99) and free on KDP Select/Unlimited.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00W82QHS2

If you enjoy nautical mystery-adventure stories, you will likely enjoy Chicken of the Sea. What makes this story worth your time and money? Real places, real things, real events, real people--how can that be when it's fiction?

Fiction requires a plot. In a nutshell: Hell-bent on revenge, two men pursue a fleeing family's sailboat around the world; their intent... kill the son. He's 12; he's done nothing wrong; he tells the story. If you've sailed long enough, you have probably met him.

Do not be put off by the whimsical title and cover, the message is clear: nothing is what it seems. When you have finished reading the first book, and want more, there are two more books to round out the trilogy.

I'm going through his "Last Kingdom" series right now. It's set during Alfred the Great's reign (and beyond) and dealing with the Danish invasion. Team Uhtred!

(It's also been made into a mini-series on Netflix, which I watched before starting the book series. They are different enough to really enjoy both.)

Re: Fiction for Cruisers

'Caribbean' by James Michener.

True this book covers more than sailing — it pretty much tells the entire history of the Caribbean, from Mayan times upto the 1905s — but covers pirates, Spanish gold, English and Spanish wars, cannibals, and pretty much anything and everything possible.

A lot of people are put off reading Michener because starting a 1,000 word story seems daunting. 'Caribbean' is different, the 1,000 pages consists of pretty muh individual, stand along chapters. For example the opening chapter is about the Mayan, then he moves on.

Excellent read, gives you a great perspective on history.
