Same old story, follow the money...
The problem is, if you start growing hemp to replace plastic, only the rich will be able to afford to eat, due to food price increase. Same happened with the experiment of replacing crude oil based fuel by plant based ones.

In the 1980s I worked in a shipyard where two huge articulated barges (open like a clamshell to dump) were built for the city of Chicago. They were garbage scows ! And where do you think the garbage got dumped?
Lake Michigan
And where do cites around the lake get there water supplies ? Duh !

The elitist military industrial agricultural pharmaceutical cartels will undoubtedly make millions cleaning up their own mess. It’s rigged. Haven’t you figured it out yet ?

The young man who started this project I don’t believe had any ulterior motives. His motive was to help clean it up! When it works citizens need to cry out to there governments to use their tax money to fix it. And to enforce laws on the books against polluting our waters with impunity. Your government won’t do it unless citizens outcry.

Example : Dwayne Johnson vs Monsanto. Finally ! Hopefulled not appealed will become a precedent. Stop poisoning and polluting! Stop the sciences lies. Stop putting epa employment of Monsanto former employees! Duh !

Bitching on a cruiser forum doesn’t do Schmitt. Whine to your Congress!!!!
Now get to work !

Soapbox out ...

Re: What happens when you hit one of these?

They launched it on Sept 8th, and it now seems to be stopped in the area "250 - 350 nautical miles offshore" where they are conducting the two-week trial before towing it into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It looks like the towboat is staying with it, at least for now.

I can't find tracking info on the Ocean Cleanup website, but the device (and towboat) are broadcasting AIS. The land-based AIS receivers lost the signal when the device was about 100 miles out to sea, but it is being picked up by satellite AIS receivers. Marinetraffic.com shows it ($16 / month for single-vessel satellite AIS tracking). The position is about 35° 50" N, 129° 18" W. Wind and waves are quite gentle right now.

Re: What happens when you hit one of these?

And as you can see, there is a fair amount of ship traffic where they are parked. They seem to have two AIS transponders (one on each end?, or perhaps one is a synthetic beacon?) I would have two for redundancy. The towboat also has a transponder.
