Still, it would be effective because target shooters have the accuracy for the small calibre. Unfortunately, handguns are a no-no with customs so out of the question to take these with you aboard. I had to sell my Hammerli… and Anschutz…

I'd rather get missed by a .45 than shot by a .22!

Have much experience of being shot by a 0.22 then.

Most I know personally who are big on large caliber seem to me like they are compensating for something that is small. Just sayin.

There use to be a sleeve you could buy to fit in a very pistol, for shotgun shells.

Why bother. If you want a gun. Get a gun

Re: Mossberg 500 Mariner in the Med.

The reason they had sold them is some countries allowed flare pistols, but not guns, when entering port.

Here's a .22 example:

Shotgun:

But if the firearm is not allowed then the ammunition will not be either.

The vepr 12 is quite legal to own in the UK for example the AK is a little more problematic. I see you like Russian stuff

Re: Mossberg 500 Mariner in the Med.

I guess the thread has come back to life. If there were no anti-gun laws in a country I plan to visit, my personal gun of choice would be a Vepr 12 AK magazine fed semi-auto 12ga shotgun or an Ak 47, but alas, the anti-gun laws do exist, so I abide by them as should any visitor to a foreign country.

When I travel throughout the Med. generally, I feed very safe or rather non-threatened, but we do spend months at anchor. However, the feeling of safety can be an illusion. Just two weeks ago I commented to several friends on how quiet our inner city neighborhood has been lately, not a peep from the any of the adjacent houses. Then my wife reads the police log on Monday... five neighbors rounded up and arrested for distribution and selling heroin from the house 20ft from my kitchen window... from where I write this post!

I'll continue to be proactive, meanwhile... I just hope the new neighbors who replace them will be as quiet.

nay not so.

Well, let me rephrase this.

Take gun in country. Disable gun. Check in gun. Keep ammo.

Re: Mossberg 500 Mariner in the Med.

What I've never understood is this: why do people worry so about the laws about carrying a weapon?

It's the laws about using a weapon that matter.

It may be legal (borderline, obviously or otherwise) to carry a weapon and ammo through a given country. But the minute you pull it out, rack the slide and blow someone off your boat, your fate is sealed, and you're going to be burned to death, Apache style. Europe's laws about killing people are, well, European. Ask Amanda Knox.

One of the most useless things in the world is a gun you can't use.

Re: Mossberg 500 Mariner in the Med.

Best gun control is the restriction of the ammo. Our ship has three Mossberg shotguns and 100 rds of 12ga Brenneke slugs, 300 rds of 12 ga 00 Buckshot and 500 rds #6 lead shot. We have been boarded on several occasions - mainly in the Atlantic by various entities and been released without complaint. Why? Everything is locked up and in plain sight on the bridge. Only my first mate and I have the keys. It's a last resort. The fire pump is the main deterrent - we can sink a panga at 50m. Plus the flare guns, pepper and CN gas.

Because I'd prefer not to spend years in a foreign prison for simply having something I'd like to have. If we really ever truly needed to use a weapon in order to ward off an attack, I wouldn't be the least bit concerned about the consequences at that time. There's a saying here in the US, "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6."
