Sailing from Fire Island Inlet to Shinnecock Inlet

Going to be making my first run out the inlet up to Shinnecock, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend how far out I should go before making the turn and heading up the coast. Thanks!

I sailed from FI inlet up to Shinnecock a few times. I stayed just a mile to a mile and a half off shore and it was fine.

Wait for a good north wind and the water will be flat well off the beach and you can rip along without worrying about breaking waves.

+1 to watching for a calm water window. In addition to watching for notherly winds, make sure that there's no big southerly storm swell coming in. Southerly swells formed a sand "lump" straight outside the inlet entrance, but, as we gathered, it migrates each year (storm?).

Other than the "lump", charts are close enough to the real thing outside the entrance.
