Porlier Pass (Ladysmith to Point Roberts)

I am debating bringing my 32' sloop from Ladysmith Harbour to Point Roberts to tie her up for the winter, and in taking Porlier Pass in a few weeks. For anyone who has sailed the Pass in late October/early November, any recommendations on how I should try to time the currents and tides to not dash myself to death on the reefs? Many thanks.

I've done Porlier pass a few times in the winter months. High or low slack. Your boat will get tossed around a bit. Stay to the middle as best you can and don't over compensate with your steering. Just think of yourself as boating up or down a river. I'd suggest motoring over sailing unless conditions are perfect. Don't stress about it too much, a lot of boats go through there. Also important, actually really important, check the B.C. ferry schedule.

Re: Porlier Pass (Ladysmith to Point Roberts)

We've been through both ways a half dozen times. Check the current tables online for Porlier to get times for high or low slack tide. Maybe time it to go through with a little current helping you and you will shoot right through. Stay in the middle as mentioned. You might feel the boat is a bit squirrelly with the eddies but no big deal.

We have also done Active Pass & approached it the same way.

Good luck!
