Does OpenCPN crash for you? I haven't seen any report of yours in neither flyspray bug tracker nor in the OpenCPN forum here on CF. BTW, OpenCPN's download count for version 3.2.2 is hitting 200000. How does it compare to Nimble's number of customers and what could the impact on the overall internet "visibility" be?
And yes, as an OpenCPN developer, I'm a little bit focused.

Re: Nimble Navigator?

Sorry Pavel, Didn't mean to offend ...

I have no experience with OpenCPN. Just when I looked some time ago at nav systems I noticed the results of the searches above. I chose what I thought was right.

And I have no numbers of how many Nimble Navigator systems are out there. You'd have to talk to Quinn. But I do see a lot of folks that have it. Not as many as OpenCPN, but the price is different.

Re: Nimble Navigator?

I tried Nimble a few years ago--it was better than CMAPECS, but not as good as OpenCPN. The last time OpenCPN crashed on me was 4 years ago, when I was trying to use it on W7. It hasn't crashed on me in 4 years and 15,000 miles since I switched back to XP.

BTW, I tried to use isailor on an Ipad on this week's delivery. The user interface is absolutely terrible compared to OpenCPN--very frustrating--don't waste your money.

Re: Nimble Navigator?

I don't have an IPad. I've looked at some of the nav software on friends IPads and I don't like the touch pad interface so much for navigation. Great for other things though.

Nimble doesn't have a version for the IPad. And last time I talked to Quinn he said he would probably never make an IPad version. I think he's strictly a Windows guy.

With a moniker like "cm93charts" it would seem that navigation systems are at the top of your interest list here. In fact, so far the only posts you have made are about such systems.

Then without trying OpenCPN you are happy to search for negatives about it and post here. Do you have an axe to grind or a vested interest?

Apart from that, I for one appreciate your earlier comments on those CM93 threads.

For the record I use OpenCPN with CM93 charts, and used the information in those threads to get me started.

Hellosailor,
If you use the Search function there are 496 results, but using the Google Custom Search there are 8.

Re: Nimble Navigator?

I don't want to grind an axe, I want to use the axe to chop through the BS about some "copyright" on the CM93 data.

And yes, I have seen OpenCPN and have no complaints about it myself. I never used it on the water. I just read what saw on the net.

And my point was not so much what nav system people should use. Just that I'd like to see more community support for using CM93.

Still, I like Nimble. My choice.

I'm the designer and developer of Nimble Navigator software and the Nimble Navstick.

One of the posters from this thread contacted me and suggested that I should join this forum, so I registered as NimbleNavigator today. I don't participate often in online forums. I hope that all of you can give me a little time to get used to how all of this works. I will be able to answer any questions about Nimble or the Navstick you might have.

Re: Nimble Navigator?

A short history about mostly nothing.

Long ago in the year 2000 in a place far away called Australia I first saw the CMAPECS software and the CM93 charts. I liked the charts but the software had a lot of problems. Installation could be a nightmare. Not having been designed as a Windows program, the user interface was strange. Even the EXIT process was hidden. The entire feel of the system was clumsy. The Y2K bug made dates and times inaccurate. The list goes on and on.

So I patched up the CMAPECS software as much as I could. Which is a challenge when you have no source code and you're just patching the binaries. And I built an simple installation pack and a set of utilities for added functionality. I called that the Utilities for CMap. A lot of people were using it and it's what I used until 2006.

Then, in another far away place called Las Palmas, I sat in the anchorage for a month and built the first version of Nimble Navigator. I built Nimble because I was tired of the limitations and problems in the CMAPECS software, and because I wanted an quick, easy to use, no nonsense navigation system. When other people saw the system I'd built, they suggested I sell it. In following years I added AIS display and GRIB weather display. It's been used around the world. And it's evolved.

In 2012 I developed the Nimble Navstick. A USB dongle with GPS, the Nimble Navigator software, and memory for the charts, all built into the dongle. A system that can just be plugged into the computer and it works, right from the dongle. Everyone said 'Very Cool!'.

So, for as long as I can, I'm just going to keep making these navigation tools simpler and more reliable. I'm still sailing 7-8 thousand miles a year. And I have time to further develop and test what more and more people are saying is the best navigation system out there.

Quinn

Re: Nimble Navigator?

Does anyone on the CF have a Nimble NAvstick and can offer an opinion?

Im thinking it might solve a lot of problems.
