Now, my old man did Panama - Tahitii solo with sextant, kero lantern, no electricity apart from AA batteries in a tape recorder, engineless monohull in 49 days. No decent Lego creations. A little crazier perhaps.....

Longest straight line voyage I ever did in my day job was New York to Cape Town, about 7200 miles without an alteration of course.... on my watch I saw 2 ships and one island in about 3 weeks.

The longest straight line commonly done by merchant ships these days would most likely be west coast South America ( Valpo etc) to the Far East.

I've done Stanley - Cape Town and vice versa more times than I should have done ... it should be about 3000 miles but it has been about 5000 in the CT - STY direction It's warmer that way

Well you can go from Cape Town to Perth on a bicycle with just a few short ferry rides in Indonesia and a jump across Torres Strait.

Most long sea passages can be shortened if you so choose... one that can't realistically be done in short legs is NZ to Chile as its about as far from Tahiti to Chile as it is from NZ.

Moving right along.... what is difficult is to be 1000 miles from land in any direction. 1000 miles south of Pitcairn is the only one I know of. Anybody know of any others?

I don't think riding a bike is the same as sailing. IMHO.

That is hopping across... they're pretty close on Latitudes so can't see how you can shorten it... that's going across between 30-40 degrees South... 5000 miles of surfing possible

Not yet.... Peregrine did Chatham Islands to Stanley non-stop in 30 days, same hull as 'Morgane'
