LED Anchor Light Replacement Part

Can someone help? I want to replace my anchor light (selden) with a led on my Catalina C320 MK2. I believe that there is currently a large feston in place. Cant seem to be able to find info. Cheers

I've had good luck with SuperBriteLEDs (link suggested above).

You might also check out Marinebeam Replacement LED bulbs for your existing boat fixtures. Some very good info on their site such as their "Idiots Guide". Just placed my first order with them.

Source LED has nice replacement bulbs, including a warm white one for the tricolour so the green doesn't end up looking blue like with a normal LED

A number of LED Festoon bulbs at Lighting Matrix. They're cheap & good quality & they take PayPal, but they're an LED factory in Hong Kong so you save on shipping if you order more than just 1 light.

Using an LED for a tri-color is problematic. The normal bulb has a vertical filament, so the change from red/green happens instantly (for an observer). LEDs have to be thicker, so from directly ahead an observer sees some light through the red lens & some through the green. The eye combines these to a bright yellow (or closer to pure white if the LED is tinged towards a blue/white). So, for a narrow angle directly in front of you, it looks like you're going away. Definitely sub-optimal...

MarineBeam sells a bulb specifically to address this issue. It uses different color LEDs in the different sectors to get the right colors through the lenses.

I've also used an all white 360 degree coverage "tower" LED successfully. While probably technically not as good of a solution, practically ti worked out just fine.

I expect that the best solution using LED would be just to replace the tri color lenses with an all round clear lens and use an LED fixture with the correct color sectors.

You're right about the clear lens Belize. Lighting Matrix will also sell you a multi-color bulb for a (BA15) tri-color fitting for ~$15 if you ask nicely. I'd think that baffles between the colors would also help prevent the colors from mixing.

I've also seen a vertically mounted LED shining into a conical mirror for ~$80, but the light output doesn't seem high enough. North of Australia I was almost flattened by a cat with a very dim (LED?) tri-color that I only saw at the last minute.

I used a Dr. LED Bicolor for my boat and experienced the yellow stripe previously described.
Before I even remounted the fixture on the boat, I cut a small baffle from a 0.016 sheet of titanium I'd purchased years ago at Boeing Surplus.
I mounted it in place with some 5200 and it works great.
No yellow at all.

Thanks for posting, Senior. I'd thought this would work but I've never actually tried it or heard from anyone who did. I just noticed the yellow (white for me) area on mine. I'll fit my Aqua Signal with a baffle & see how it goes ... erm, when I get the mast back up...

So your LED bulb was already two colours?

Mine are. I used Dr LED both bicolor and tricolor. Worked great in my aquasignal. They were green red and white led I have not noticed a yellow strip. But the bulbes are diffrent color. You either have to have a clear lense over red green and or colored LEDs under red green lense. I first used a clear LED in my aquasiginal and it made a great pink and blue glow. I changed to the tri color LED and it worked great.

You can get away from the pink and blue problem by using a warm white LED designed for use in navigation lights. I have one from Source LED and the colour looks perfect.

The problem is the yellowy white look from dead ahead since you're seeing both colours at the same time. What people on this thread are saying is that it's because the LED bulb is wide, not just a thin vertical filament.

Like I said I got around the pink and blue light by using the recomended red and green LED. But what ever works. Its a light wave issue. I know most are not certified. Just trying to pass on some info.
