Gibraltar to Cape Town,

Hello all. Im going to be doing a trip from Gibraltar to cape town in about 2 months on a compass 48. im looking for advise on the best route to take. I know people mostly go across to brazil, down to about 30 - 35 degrees south and then back across to cape town, but I have heard another option is to travel roughly SW until about 25 degrees west then down the middle of the atlantic, maybe stop at St. Helena, and down and across to cape town.
has anyone done this trip, or a similar one, before?
Any advice and input would be appreciated.
