True, i have 1 mac desktop, I was a hardened Wintel man , till a few years ago, Then you realise that the mac gets the same productivity of 4 wintels, the TCO is in fact lower.

Not sure that is true

From 2007

And with the continuing fall in prices for hardware without the commensurate fall in prices for Mac i ma sure it is even more true now.

Good point. I was thinking about that the other day. Who would be happy with an engine that they can't service themselves, or a DC panel that they can't add a breaker to without paying a licence fee to someone?

Boats are open-source!

Boat: So many boats to choose from. Would prefer something that is not an AWB, and that is beachable...

Oh, I agree with the "Open Source isn't Socialism" argument. I'm a follower of Eric Raymond after all...

Although it sounds like an oxymoron, it's even possible to have open-source copy-protection, where the software is open, but decryption of something still requires a secret key.
Open Source DRM is not possible. DRM, all DRM, relies on not giving the user 100% control over his hardware, or hiding something from the user. You can't do that with open source. It would always be possible for a skilled programmer to write a modifed version of the software that saves unencrypted copies of the encrypted files somewhere.

People still do buy cars however...

I think that is one of the attractions of boats (at least to me).

That's true. I was thinking of message encryption.

Yes but how many of them take their cars thousands of miles away from the nearest tow truck or service station?

Very few actually.

My friend regularly drives to and from Alaska and around Canada's west.
He carries things like a long distance cruiser does.

Re: A tablet to replace it ALL: how, which one, which apps?

I think this sums the marine industry up in one...

Foreign terms, propriety software/hardware platforms, outdated technology and interface...all equals poor service.

I recently enquired from several sources, a quote and some advice on updating all Nav Gear etc on 40ft motor sailer, which I plan to take from Oz to Indo on surfing/cruising holiday, of which I had, say around 10k to spend...

All I got was several no replies...and one chap said he did not want to waste 2hrs of his time on quoting 2 or 3 different options for me and in the end he never replied with anything.

In the end I did lots of reading, one of which was this forum and decided that, just like sailing on blue water YOUR ON YOUR OWN which ever way you decided to go...All the best and remember "Your govt and polly's don't give a dam about you, so we better start caring for each other, because a world devoid of any kind of hope and faith in our fellow men/women is going to be a very scary place to live"...HP
