Windlass with Good Manual Backup

I'm looking for an electric anchor windlass that is reasonable to operate manually. Many windlasses have some provision for manual operation, but it's hard to find videos -- or other discussion -- of what it's like, in practice, to use them manually. Slow is OK, but back-breaking, awkward or knuckle-busting is not.

This is for a 1968 Islander 37, and I'll be getting a cruising weight (i.e., heavy) anchor and chain to go with the windlass. There's plenty of room for either a horizontal or vertical windlass.

Also, do people agree that 1,000 lbs of max pull is more than strictly necessary, but it's good to have the margin?
