Nilsson H700 windlass repair

Hi all,

I've recently had to repair my old windlass due to what i suspect was a rookie mistake....that is not understanding how to properly snub off the anchor chain from the windlass whilst underway.

Some background; I've a 25kg CQR at the bow with 70m of 3/8 chain. There is a locking bolt for the chain, however i stopped using it while motoring from harbour as a safety measure....not so long ago the motor cut out at a very inconvenient time at a narrow breakwater entrance (air in fuel). The windlass itself ceased to be built around 1978, but incredibly Nilsson a family run company still operate in Auckland NZ.

From the pics attached you can see that the problem became obvious once everything was apart (sheared worm wheel). A call to Nilsson and i had a new shaft, worm wheel, worm drive and bearings on the way across the ditch, these guys were good to deal with and the parts fit the old windlass perfectly I was also lucky enough to have detailed drawings that the PO had filed away onboard of the internals of the motor, part numbers ect.

I'm guessing that i'm probably not the first to break their windlass in this manner, but from now on i wont be letting the anchor hang off the windlass while sailing with the clutch locked on

cheers, Scott
