Re: How many anchors do you have?

Olly,
I guess I'll bite...
I have three anchors on-board, all with their own chain and/or rodes.

Boat is 47' LOA
Draft is 6' (10,750lbs lead keel)
Disp just shy of 14 tons

On the bow rollers:
Annie Laurie Translant
4705302
Primary anchor: 90lb Delta, w/300' of grade 43/HT chain and 75' of 3/4" nylon at the bitter end...
Second anchor (for Bahamian Moor, kedge, etc.): 44lb Bruce, w/60' of grade 43/HT chain and 250' of 3/4" nylon...

Stowed below:
http://i67.tinypic.com/3499fnd.jpg (this is my 5' 3" tall sister standing next to the Fortress)
Strom Anchor: Fortress FX-125 (yeah it's a beast, but storm anchors should be!), with two tandem 100' lengths of grade 43/HT chain and 450' of 3/4" double-braid (Dacron/Poly-braid over Nylon-braid)...

I hope this is what you're looking for.
Fair winds.

John

P.S. Couldn't get the image posting to work, so posted links instead....have a look.

Re: How many anchors do you have?

I got the one size up Rocna as a primary/hail Mary in a storm, but good lord John, that fortress is enormous!

So consensus seems to be you can't have too many anchors, and I should think about up sizing the fortress.

Now just need to work out where to put them all......

Re: How many anchors do you have?

I came close to getting a FX-125 myself, there were reconditioned ones being sold, after some storm, forget which.
There are times when I think I should have. Didn’t realize they were that big though.

Timely discussion

I was just thinking about this....

On a catamaran displacing 6 tons I have a 20 kg Rocna as primary and a Fortress FX16 in reserve.

I am still trying to figure out where I want to store the Fortress, but choices are an already busy cross beam locker ( where the primary chain and rode resides), or in an aft lazarette locker (with concerns for weight placement).

My take is that people buy new anchors and keep the old ones.

Unless your prospecting for oil, I think 3 anchors are enough[emoji4]

Coastal cruising. Maybe three. You will use two someday and you may loose one. On the other hand, I did this for 20 years with two. Only once would I have liked to have had a 3rd when I lost one, but I replaced it before I had any need of it. So I'd say two.

Distance cruising. I've never gone far enough that I couldn't replace a lost anchor in a few days. But still, three should be enough. Four is defensible if you might face a tropical storm.

(dinghy anchors don't count)

How many do I have is a different question, since I've done a lot of testing. About 12, but I'd need to go count them. I only carry 2 (NG and pivoting fluke).

Re: How many anchors do you have?

40kg Rocna and 30kg Manson (was originally on boat). Might take the Manson off and get a Danforth for use as a kedge, mainly to save weight. Carting the Manson around in the dinghy is no fun. Also need to get a lightweight dinghy anchor.

Re: How many anchors do you have?

5 ton boat and two #45 Mantus', one stowed dissembled in the bilge. A #15 fluke on the stern for bahamian moor / emergency. Small grapnal dinghy anchor.

The mantus looks almost comical how big it sits on the bow. The thought was, why not? It fits and it's still a reasonable size to handle with or w/o the windlass.

Dale,
Great to see you here!!
Madagascar sounds wonderful!!

I have the Fortress stowed below, under the forward Pullman berth...

It is stowed down low and far outboard, lashed to the frame/structure holding the Fischer Panda...
(and yes, it is a PAIN to get it in there....when removing, I open up the bag and remove the shank and flukes, and then pull the bag with the rest, out...)

Oh, and BTW, I used to have a 60lbs CQR (it came with the boat)....gave it away to another sailor who needed an anchor (and was down on the fund$)....
Also carry a 16' Fiorentino Para-Anchor and a drogue, too...(with rodes)

Hope this helps...

John

Re: How many anchors do you have?

Thanks John, that things huge!

I store a 60lb Delta under there. I'm thinking of purchasing a 65lb Mantus in the future for ease of storage, the Delta would be a real pain to get out in any sort of hurry.

My primary is a 60lb Manson Supreme with 90m (270ft) chain, I'm very happy with it. I also have a small danforth.

Unfortunately I need the other side of my anchor locker for petrol(gas) containers thus no room for the second anchor other than a danforth. The manson supreme makes it hard to carry a second anchor on the bow rollers.
