Dinghy Wheels

Wasn't sure where to post this but you use the dingy at anchor right? So..

I'm looking for dinghy wheels. Anyone have experience of these? Are they robust? Will they last?

Re: Dinghy Wheels

Where do you intend to use the dinghy wheels? On a hard surface or a beach w/sand or rocks to pull the dinghy?
The one's you linked to would be good for a hard surface, while a bigger balloon tire may be better on a beach. The bigger tires are usually better, but they can be more difficult to fit depending on available transom space.

Re: Dinghy Wheels

We have a set of the removable Beachmaster dinghy wheels (https://www.beachmaster.co.nz/usa-and-canada-store) on our Achilles LSI-290 that have been in use for maybe five years. They are well built, easy to mount and remove and a real help in landing the dinghy on a hard sand or small stone beach or moving it on a launching ramp. We'd buy them again.

Re: Dinghy Wheels

Danard rocks! Large inflatable wheels easy to deploy without pins. Unless you always come ashore at Daytona Beach with hard sand big inflatable wheels are the way to go. The majority of local experienced cruisers here use them and they don't agree on much else.

Re: Dinghy Wheels

We have always used a fender to roll the dinghy along. Works on all surfaces we've encountered. It does not have to be an expensive one, and it has two purposes, so far.

Re: Dinghy Wheels

From a rolling across anything viewpoint these fat, low pressure wheels are the best I've tried but you have to pump them up occasionally. They are 10" diameter. There are two more 8" on the telescoping front wheels.

The second best I have used, and they were zero maintenance, were golf cart wheels. Large diameter, non inflated rubber tires, nylon plain bearings.

Re: Dinghy Wheels

You might find this useful from Emily & Clark. A friend has these same wheels installed and likes them. The fender technique seems like a great idea if you only need to do it occasionally.

The smart Aleck rejoinder to this is that you live in Canada and the ground is frozen solid all the time and consequently small, hard wheels are perfectly adequate.

Re: Dinghy Wheels

To counter the year round frozen landscape we keep an Outremer in the Caribbean. Not only does this keep us warm it seperates from the marauding kangaroos that you deal with .
Interestingly we dont haul the dingy up the beach all that often. I usual anchour it in knee deep water and in the areas where we do haul it the sand is reasonably firm .

We also are in the Caribbean. We were instant converts to the 4” bumper when we saw a couple of 80 year olds easily roll their dinghy up the sand. Bumpers don’t dig into soft sand.

Re: Dinghy Wheels

Another vote for Beach master wheels. I would never buy any other dinghy wheels after having these.
